BTS with Oscar joke writers

I find it sad that a whole team of 'comedy' writers can sit around for over a month doing nothing but think of jokes, and still produce the mediocrity they did.

The price of writing by committee?

They had a few good moments, and quite a few not so good moments.
I like Steve Martin, so I probably go easy on him.

I enjoyed the article's idea of Martin as being the "analytical perfectionist", and Baldwin being the big "humor fullback".

But, isn't there always something to complain about at the Oscars?
The films, the host(s), the nominees, the winners, the attire, the speeches, the sound, the switching, the etc...

Would it really be the Oscars if there wasn't something to b!tch about? :furious3:

While I didn't find the jokes all that bad I could still predict the punchline in almost every one.
They telegraphed them far too much. I wanted something a little more witty and sharp.

In the end though I'm probably in the minority as I enjoyed the show for what it was.

Would the Oscars even be worth watching at all, if there was nothing to ***** about...?

He!! no

And yes, wittier would have been better (usually is).
But then there seems to be a dearth of witty on TV... :violin:

Watch a few episodes of Arrested Development...

Really smart comedy doesn't have mass appeal... unfortunately.

am i the only one that thinks this job sounds incredibly easy? my sister and i could come up with plenty of material in a month. how does one get a job like this?

well, I tried to do this once and failed miserably, its not as easy as it looks. but, enjoyed the bts look.

"walkie-talkie minions" LOL

We live in the age of stupidity. Intelligent thinking is very out in the U.S. Sad to say that the few intelligent shows that make it onto TV are usually ratings failures. People like dumb.

Dumb is just a by-product of lazy. Which, since so many problems follow in its train, is actually worse.

What I mean to suggest is that the laziness exists on the dumb end. Yeah, reducing stuff to that level is work for the person doing it, who presumably isn't quite so dumb as the intended audience...

And what I meant is that intended audience may be in fact not as dumb as the person doing dumbing down thinks.

I don't know. No one ever lost money underestimating the intellect of the American public.
I don't have a TV subscription anymore. I don't watch History Channel and Discovery Channel like I used to. I watch occasional titles from Netflix and some BBC documentaries, which are not as dumb and patronizing yet as American documentaries have become. So effectively cablecos and advertisers are losing money on me.

Interesting that Discovery Channel has different versions of the same shows for different markets. Recently I watched a series about Russian wildlife, I watched two versions: a European and an American. Different pacing, different music, different narration, different tone of narration, even different cutting. Needless to say that I liked Euro version more, which simply showed images with a few meaningful comments instead of making it into a hour-long trailer to a horror film.

I am digressing again. So, any funny jokes from the committee? Maybe something about Kathryn Bigelow resurfacing on Oscar scene, damaged after the blow with her last movie, but still alive and willing to fight? Har-har-har.

The History Channel lost me when they started uncritically presenting the contents of the Gospels as 'history,' and the Discovery Channel lost me when they started presenting people running around at night pretending to see ghosts as 'documentary.'

Yeah, Euro and Asian programming seems to credit the viewer with slightly more intelligence - or at least education - than US stuff. The content that runs here, anyway.

I can't help thinking that we are only a year or two out from living in Idiocracy. Not a great movie but definitely had some great ideas in the script about where we are heading. And dumb is in, not just on television, which has evolved into a dumb medium, but in literature, news, really all forms of media. Smart is out in the U.S.

In my couple of trips and the weeks I spent in Europe last year, I did not get sense that dumb is as pervasive over there in general. The Kardashian sisters, Lindsey, Brittney and the tabloid culture that passes for "news" here have not become as pervasive in European media as they are here (except for the UK it seems?)
