BSG - Blood & Chrome

New Battlestar Galactica cylon war prequel trailer.

What do you BSG fans think? I'm still processing my thoughts on it.

Hmmm... I dunno... hard to tell from the trailer.

The main two impressions are:

1. A lot of the CGI looks a lot less real and a lot more heavily-relied-on than in BSG

2. It looks like it suffers from one aspect of prequels that frequently irks me - that is, the technology looks more advanced in the "earlier" prequel than in the "later" original, just because our ability to make things look more technologically advanced has improved between the series. One of the best things about BSG was how they reigned this tendency in. One of the worst things about Caprica was that they didn't (the robot development process, which IMHO should have been the great focus and strength of the show, was instead instantaneous and glossed over, and the "common" butler robot in whatsisname's house was already more advanced than anything they were attempting with the military robots, etc.).

3. (An unforesenn 3rd impression!) I miss the serenity and doco-style of BSG, and Bear McReary's music!

I had always wanted BSG to take more design cues from the original; the flashback episodes with the more-original-looking ships/Cylons, etc., were always very popular.

As a BIG fan of the revamped series only, I'm excited about anything BSG. The more BSG the better. I also prefer this to the direction that Caprica took, which was more drama, moody politics and morality plotlines. This is more geared to the action crowd, of which I am. I just hope they find a good balance like the original revamped series did.

The CG sets are a bit bothersome, but I know they tore down the original sets so I'm forgiving them on that one.

It also seems to be taking a flashier look. I for one like the approach, though I'll have to see more to be completely convinced.

Not sure if I agree with that assessment. From the trailers (the few flashes we get of any tech) it looks like they're using good old fashioned buttons and knobs for all their tech. The one shot of a fancy console must be from the cylon's ship. The rest seems to all be older tech from the cylons, big bulky robots, circular bulky fighters, etc... Not to mention what they used on the Battlestar WAS the tech from this first Cylon war. The new tech, new fighters, new ships, all broke down because of their networks and wi-fi. So there shouldn't be much of a jump backwards from what we're used to.

EDIT: I guess you're talking about the fancy digital wire grid of the fighter shot? Perhaps it's a flight simulator, of which they could have had, just was never shown because they were on the run in the revamped series.

Bear is scoring it at least. Not sure why they decided to mimic the Girl with the dragon tattoo trailer for this one. Guess they're trying to push the "new fresh" feeling.

Right, I wouldn't expect a jump backwards; and it's hard to quantify what I'm saying... part of it was indeed some of the computer displayes that flash by in the trailer, some of it had to do with clothing and equipment; but I think a lot of the impression has to do with the "slickness" of the CGI (and possibly the non-CGI elements which need to match that CGI).... BSG was GRITTY, kinda familiar, and real. The doco-style of BSG also made it feel much less "perfect" and "advanced". Much of this trailer looks kinda like a slick cutscene.

In any case, it seems like an early stage, and like it shouldn't be out in the public (it was just pulled from YouTube)... so I'm hoping... anyway, when is the show due to appear?

I've been looking everywhere but there's no release date it seems. SyFy has been sitting on it for a while now, unsure what to do with it. Right now it's not going to be a series, but they're releasing it online, and as a movie on tv... Then they're going to see what to do next, but I think they have very little faith in it. Seems like Syfy really needs something to up their tv line up though.

You can check it out here while it's still up.

Seems like the trailer was not authorized and done for a convention or something? Thus the girl with the dragon tattoo spoof. Now they're trying to pull all the videos. As for it being unfinished, not sure. I know they re-did all the Battlestar backgrounds in CGI because the sets were torn down, so it's a very CGI based series. Never a good thing...
