This one intrigued me because I think Sacha Baron Cohen is a comic genius (I don't use the term lightly) and decent social commentator to boot. And the critics just savaged it: some of the "top critics" on Rotten Tomatoes said things like, "This makes the worst Adam Sandler film look like Kubrick," and "It will be amazing if he gets another movie funded after this."

So I went to a matinee show prepared to not feel too bad about wasting $5/per. And laughed gloriously. It wasn't a masterpiece by any stretch, but it had masterful moments. The girl I took to the show remarked beforehand, "At least get me a drink if you're taking me to a stupid movie." And after, "That movie seriously improved my mood."

This is, to my mind, another prime example of the bandwagon critic phenomenon. The premise of the biggest gag is about as vulgar as anything you can imagine, and nothing is left off-screen. And the audience was roaring. Of course this is the sort of thing no respectable critic can admit to enjoying, so instead they'll clutch their pearls and wait to get on board with whatever tepid goo Will Farrell does next.

I would comment also that the action sequences are nicely executed, even if that's not what you're in it for. Curious to hear others' thoughts.
 
I would imagine it's a bit like the Dictator. Which was not a good movie but had a number of funny parts that stand very well on their own. Plus a few scenes that are simply beyond awful. :)
