My HVX got dropped and landed on the side of the LCD, busting it. The rest of the camera is fine and operates with no problems that I've noticed yet. That's great since the thing is built like a tank, but the LCD is just trashed. What is the cost to get a new LCD?
sorry to hear of your misfortune . . .
odds are you may receive a bevy of answers to your question (here), but your best (and perhaps only legitimate) answer will be from Panasonic . . . why not give the repair center a call?
I gave Panasonic a call. The price for a replacement LCD assembly is $472.34 plus shipping. And a service manual can be had for another $50. The part is backordered until the 28th. The technician said he thinks I would need open the case of the camera to do the repair, so my warranty would be voided. He estimated the extra cost beyond that to have it repaired at the Panasonic center out East would be about $130, plus I'd have to pay to ship it there and back and wait who knows how long.
So, that's creeping up on the $700-$800 range. Would I be better off just ordering a 7" external lcd and using that instead? How feasible would that be for handheld use? Would I still get the same readouts - audio meteres, f-stop, etc.? Or are the flipout lcd and viewfinder the only route for the stats? Which external monitors are recommended that are lightweight, hi-res, and can easily be used attached to the top of the HVX w/ a swivel for hand held shooting?
Almost $500 seems awfully pricey for such a tiny, low res flipout screen....
Something I've always wanted was a wi fi eyepatch viewfinder that straps right to your head, or to the frame of a pair of glasses. Does such a thing exist? I'd even go for a cabled version.
