I'm probably the outsider here..

But I cannot understand the praise the short film 'Broken' gets on this forum. I finally had a chance to look over the DVD..

I was incredibly underwhelmed to say the least. The Acting is horrible... the sound work is a complete joke.

The worst has to be the editing / shot selection... it just grated on me and looked very poor.

The film looked ok in terms of lighting, and the location was really nice.. the one guy with the scar was ok...

I don't understand the praise this film gets.. is it because it cost $8000 to make? Cause there are plenty of examples of films that cost that much.. and are far superior..

Amen.

Some of the DVD features on marketing are great, but aside from that I missed the "greatness" of the DVD that was touted.

Yeah, I bought it, but wasn't too impressed. Impressed by the marketing -- good for him for doing so well with it. It's not junk, but it's not as suave as I'd been led to believe. I've seen several DVX fest entries that are better.

There's the truest statement that you'll see in this thread.

Look at Winter Lilacs, or any of the winners from the LoveFest... um, sorry, but no comparison. When Broken was spanking new it wasn't bad... but the quality of output from lesser equipped production teams has definitely left it in the dust.

It's pretty amazing how good the flicks have been getting in the fests. I'm curious to hear what entries have gone on to other acclaim?

yeah i said this a while back. overrated and overhyped owned it and gave it away. some good shots but predictable script and horrible acting.

i got my broken DVD in the mail about 2 weeks ago. Thought the movie was very well done for stock DVX ( i haven't seen stuff look so good without adapter, except maybe disjectas stuff )

lighting was great, grading was terrific. Some of the audio levels and reverbs were off for the surrounding area, sounded very ADR.

I thought the scar dude acted very well, and the acting in general, although sometimes overdone suited the genre and feeling well.

my only beef was the special features. there was no Play all selection. So if you're viewing this on a computer, in bed, every 2 minutes you have to get up and play the next section.. this got annoying to the point thati stopped watching.. damn.

still though, better than anything i have ever done. so my critique ends there.

This thread is disturbing. Being technically critical is one thing, but the comments seem to border on a public slathering of one of own and I guess I don't really understand it.

Broken is an independent project that pushed marketing to the level you would expect to see with studio distribution. What's wrong with that?

The way people on here pimp their five minute shorts is no different - pages and pages of self-promotion, usually with plenty of fun, ego and self-deprecation built in.

Shut this thread down, it's below what DVXUser is supposed to be.
