Broadcast safe (FCP)

I need to make my images broadcast safe- there were a few hot spots on our actors' heads where the light was set too bright. I know that a yellow exclamation mark indicates that either the luminance or chroma is a problem, but how do I know which is the problem? How can this be fixed? Any help will be appreciated! Thanks!

Hey buddy.

There are a couple of ways to do this. The fast/easy way is to utilize the Broadcast Safe filter in Effects>Video Filters>Color Correction>Broadcast Safe. You can select all the clips you want to affect and just drag and drop the effect onto them, or use the menu commands.

The downside is that it's a catch-all effect that doesn't really give you total control over your levels. The more in-depth way to do it would be to open your scopes (Tools>Video Scopes) and use the Waveform and Parade scopes to monitor your highlights as you bring them down/up using the Color Corrector 3-Way filter.

There are even more ways to do this, and some will tell you that you shouldn't even bother without some kind of hardware scopes, but don't sweat that. Just use your best judgment until you're happy with the picture.

Good luck!
