Briteks break?!?

OK, now I'm all scared, so lets just quickly clear this up.

How many ppl have ordered briteks and now dont work? And not because of something stupid like dropping it or touching the bulb.

Re: Briteks break?!?

I talked to Tom a few minutes ago. He told me that the problem with my speed ring was a defective batch from a few months back that they thought they had send entirely back to Britek, but alas, they missed one. :(

He's sending me a new speed ring and a new globe.

I'll post this in the "Briteks crapped out" thread too.

Re: Briteks break?!?

Let's face it, you get what you pay for. Briteks work but they are not manufacturered to amazing specs and are more fragile than more expensive fixtures. Buy on and try it. If it works well for you buy another. If not buy something more expensive.

Re: Briteks break?!?

Solid advice. Briteks are not a substitute for real fixtures (i.e. Altman, Arri, etc) but they are an amazing value for what you get (provided that they work... all the ones that I've used have worked repeatedly and flawlessly, but it is disconcerting to hear reports of breakage).

Re: Briteks break?!?

Again, fragile I can deal with, and i imagine arri's are better (lol) but $80 for a light that just refuses to turn on in the first 6 hours is another.

If no one else has horror stories of briteks that just stop working, then I'l feel better.

Re: Briteks break?!?

No horror stories here. I love 'em & use them for my side projects... but no, I wouldn't use them for ENG work. It does scare me that some people have had problems, as I love mine & am debating buying a 1000-watt softbox next.

But, if you'd REALLY like to hear some horror stories, I'll tell you about the eggcrates on the Lowel Caselights we use here at work. >:(

Re: Briteks break?!?

The company I work with is doing some manufacturing in China. We have found some inconsistencies in the quality of the products we receive. We get a good shipment, then suddenly we see the quality go down. We have attributed most of these problems to fast-turnover of people and a proactive attempt by these manufacturing companies trying to make the components cheaper (without always telling us). They might get a good deal on a batch of a specific type of metal one month which can change the environmental behavior of the product (i.e. heat, moisture, alltitude, etc.). So unless there is a strong quality advocate overseeing these changes, things like inconsistency can happen...

Re: Briteks break?!?

as stated, you get what you pay for.

Maybe the light works just as well as any other light, maybe it never fails. It's true that the lights are cheaper...but you're not paying for the high manufacturing standards or quality control.

It's a gamble like anything.  Statistically, it may not be too risky, but there's obviously some risk involved in paying for a cheaper product.

Re: Briteks break?!?

I've used the Briteks for hours outdoors in light drizzle and one actually got blow over by the wind :o (landed on the barn doors ;D). They all seem to be working still.. Knock on wood.. ::)

Re: Briteks break?!?

..ive had no problems with mine at all. when i purchased them i got 2 extra bulbs just becuase of the stories ive heard, but i havent had to replace one yet, on- off - on - off - travel- back of car - hot - cold - whatever- theve been great. .. i do feel better having a couple extra bulbs on hand just in case though...cause even if they lasted for years, i wouldnt want to have one go out in the middle of a shoot, and have me stand there saying " ....uh.. ummm .. i guess i shouldve had a spare bulb.."

..anyway ive been very satisfied with the purchase so far.
