Brightcove Alternatives

Hey everyone,

My organization I work for at Ohio University is a video production group called Athens Video Works Productions (http://www.avwproductions.com). We have been using the Brightcove console for some time now, until they released the fact that they were no longer offering the free service. We got a quote and they are asking for 6k / year! That is almost a grand over our budget for a year.

Does anyone know of any alternatives preferably free? Or ways to get video hosted on multiple sites?

whoa thats crazy, i never knew that brightcove started charging, i remember when they used to be free, but that was when they first started i guess... What exactly are you looking for? Have you checked out BLip.tv ... They are pretty cool and best of all its free, and excellent quality.

yeah they are shutting down there free service in December. We need a platform that we can monitor views, and be able to distribute players across multiple sites. We may be able to adapt to something like blip.tv, and I will look at motionbox. Thanks. If anyone else knows any that would be great.

You should check out Ooyala.com There's a pretty big buzz about them around the web lately.

ooyala looks sweet, but we really were just hoping for something free. Oh well - guess its time to go to open source.

Vimeo. BlipTV.

I used Brightcove before and it was great. Then they came out with the Publishpod and all that crap. It was hard to use. I stopped using it. I wouldn't pay them a dime for what they have now.

Here is the deal with those, we have a bunch of people who need to be able to do a bunch of different things with them, and we are hoping to be able to change our lineups weekly. Those only give us the option of uploading video. We need the whole platform. Similar to BC and ooyala.com

Ideas - both too expensive.

Thanks

I'm in the same boat you are. I really liked Brightcove and what they gave me free. can't really blame them for wanting to make $$.

Ooyala was the first to catch my as another already mentioned. Magnify.net also caught my eye. This has been called the free version of Brightcove.

What has most caught my eye though, is the base that Ooyala is built on - Amazon Web Services. Two services in particular - S3 and E2 - look very relevant to what I want to do as far as hosting and serving video.

good luck!

yeah I know what you mean. BC was awesome - and no I can't blame them for wanting to make money, but I do think it is crap that they don't have any middle of the road service.

Endavo Media (http://endavomedia.com/interettv.html) is a great and lower-cost alternative to Brightcove.

You can upload videos, pictures and audio files or stream live from your events. You can also allow and control user-gen uploads, embed videos and players on other websites, blogs and social networks and let other group members or users do the same. Their platform lets you take advantage of viral sharing and social distribution, run a contest or even make some extra cash from banner advertisement, pre- and post-roll ads, sponsorships and more.
