Bridal Viel.

Picked up a couple yards of Bridal Veil (spell) for $5.00 a yard for using as diffusion. Tested it out it HARD SUNLIGHT (NOON) and let me say how nice it works at softening the shadows and bringing it down a stop.

Also used a FOAM CORE board to bounce some light from the opposite side. Works very nice. Imagery actually looks like I knew what I was doing.

OF course my wife is getting tired of playing STAND IN and wants to know when Ill be making a damn movie.

Just a little gueriila tip.

Re: Bridal Viel.

hey John you have a pic of your fabric.. that was on my list this weekend to get and it would be nice to see what you had good results with.

I bought a Litedisc 5in1 bounce yesterday.. its very good as it has 4 different bounces and a large diffusion disk that works great.. but they are, like most things, a total ripp off.

Re: Bridal Viel.

:D

Yeah, I had to explain to the GIRLS at the fabric shop that it was for my fetish. My filmmaking fetish that is. Ill see about posting some pics of the fabric (Firewire is at office though) so it might be on Monday!

I was thinking of a good bounce tool other than FoAMCORE was the Car Window Shades? You know the kind I mean? With the silverish side and the bright white side?

Probally less expensive since it doesnt have a film logo on it :P

Re: Bridal Viel.

I happened to notice a gold-colored car reflector casting light on passersby a few days ago, and though "wow, what a nice bounce."

There are always MacGuyver methods.

Re: Bridal Viel.

when you rent a bounce from the Light Equipment house you get a piece of foamcore with tinfoil taped to one side.. white on oneside, silver on the other. Pretty Mcgyver, that even the pros use :)

Re: Bridal Viel.

LOL

So true. MAny options:

Home Depot Insulation Board (Forgot name) that has silver sides and weighs like half a pound. 3 by 5 sheets.

Re: Bridal Viel.

The Home Depot insulation board is good stuff. I think it's called "beadboard".

For the 5-in-1 litediscs, I have a couple of PhotoFlex's. They are astoundingly expensive, something like $100 at B&H. I got 'em off ebay for around $40 each, and at $40 they're a good deal.

Re: Bridal Viel.

Tinfoil is hard to get an even bounce light with, but there is this great silver stuff for insulating water heaters and the like that works great taped onto a piece of CELETEX (the insulation board at Home Depot with a shiny silver side) This gives a hard and soft side to your bounce board. The bridal veil is a good idea. I use a 4x4 frame of opal diffusion for outdoor closeups, but if it's windy it tends to make noise. I'll try the veil material. I've used the car reflectors before, but I really dislike flexible light disks. They are nearly impossible to keep steady in even the slightest breeze, and you tie up a crew member for the whole time you're rolling.

Re: Bridal Viel.

tinfoil works fine.. you have to of course mush it into a ball and then un mush it.

When I first started out, working a rental house, one of my first projects was building the bounce cards for our light kits. These started out as 4x8 sheets of foam core cut down to 2x4 sections. Cut an emergency space blanket (2.99 at Target, covers three sections) wrinkle it up real good and spray glue to the foam core. Trim excess. Tape two sections along the long ends (this allows it to fold for transport) and also tape around the perimeter.

We would also make these out of foam core with one black side and one white side but this kind of foam core might be harder to find.

Re: Bridal Viel.

Black foam core can be bought at Office Depot or OfficeMax (don't remember which, maybe both) and you can also get it at just about any art supply house.

You can get insulation boards at Home Depot/Lowe's that are styrofoam, silver on one side and white on the other (although you have to peel off a thin plastic lining off the white side). Ready-made bounce board.
