Brevis + XH-A1 - Problem?

Ates, some XH-A1's require the achromat spaced back using a 72mm spacer ring. We stock them, but you can also use a gutted 72mm "cheap" macro ring. This will give you the extra zoom-in you may require. With the flip module, this spacer is not required.

I am having black bars moving. Well I zoomed it enough. If i zoom more focus is lost and can not be set. Also lots of dust in the view. Those black bars are not staying still, as i move the camera they are moving too. Please check the attached files:

Any ideas?

Canon XH-A1
Brevis 35mm Preflip module
Nikon 50mm lens

Ates, do you have the OIS engaged? If so, you need to turn it off. The OIS on the camera tries to steady the vibrating ground glass and, as a consequence, it moves the picture on the GG.

Never use the OIS with 35mm adapters.

Well i remıved that spacer ring and it is a bit better. I couldn't remove those dusts. I cleaned everything and it is still there. Bytw even i removed that spacer there are black bars around... And on/off switch is not working. It is sticked i can not move it...! Well until now i couldn't do anything. I couldn't even setup rails :(

the spacer has to be between your achromat and brevis.

XHA1 = Achromat = spacer = Brevis= 35mm lens

For the XHA1 you need the spacer with the Brevis. and you will be between Z63 - Z67 when you use it with a spacer and the black will be gone...

I bought spacer... Hmm Let me change to order of it but mine is like this:

A1 - spacer - achromat - brevis - lens

I got achromat and brevis sticked together..

When I turned it of it is not moving anymore.. Thank you so much. But i am still confused with the state order...

is it A1 - spacer or a1 - achromat?

A1 = achromat = spacer= brevis=35mm lens

You have to remove the achromat and put the spacer between the achromat and brevis

Have you read the directions? This information is in the pdf you can pull from the owners section on the Cinevate forum.

You should read them. The unit is very easy to set up if you read them. You should do that before you inadvertently break something.

Well I made it now. But there are still dusts. When I clean them there are waves and dusts. I don't know where is that dust :(

If the dust is inside , you got to remove the whole casing to clean it with compressed air. The switch comes and goes somettimes. It is a common motor mul function of the Brevis. But I'm sure Dennis will fix it. Have you also bought the battery pod? If you haven't bought the battery pod, make sure that you don't fully drain the Brevis internal batteries. Because it is not going to charge up if you do drain the internal batteries. and maybe that is also why the switch is not working.

It is wise that you get acess to the Private forum and see the manuals and understand how to open the Brevis before trying.

David yes i also bought that... Well i cleaned all lenses with my sunglasses cleaner and there are waves all over the lens. Do you also have any solution for that? :)

Are you saying that switch may not work all the time and it only works if it charged?

Seems like the cleaner that you are using is leaving some marks. do you have lens tissue. Thet are better or a micro cloth but don't use liquid sloutions especially those with alcohol

hmm no i don't have it but i will go buy tomorrow...so i will also need compressor. for this upside down display, do you use external monitor with it?

David one more thing. Can you help me to use this focus and zoom preset? I ve read everything in the manual but i couldn't manage it :(

It is really up to you. on the upside down issue. It is good to have even when you use it on the flip unit later. Because the 2.8" LCD on the XHA1 is a no no for critical focusing. But if you mainly shoot in a studio, Just hook it up to the studio monitor. A small 7" External is useful only when you gun & go. Even when you shoot outside and on a tripod , You can use a Laptop to monitor the image.

Because you are using the XHA1, Please hook the XHA1 output to the biggest TV you have at home, If is HD, even better.

use for grid function on the XHA1. Set your brevis up with the grid and aline the Brevis to the XHA1 first.

Next zoom in on your XHA1 until the black line are gone, With the spacer, it should be around Z63 - Z67 . Then set the zoom Present on your XHA1. It is always better to go alittle more because of the underscan of the LCD, But since you are using a big home TV, use the TV to judge.

Nextstep is to do the focus:
Make sure that you face the 35mm lens at something bright, then step down your lens to F16 ( nikon or any brand that allows you to turn the F-stop on the lens.)

If you are using a EOS canon lens, use the Canon SLR camera to turn it down to F16 and then remove it and place it on the Brevis.(without turning off your SLR of course). This way the lens will be set at F16, But remenber to return it to the SLR to OPEN it to the required F-stop that you are after.

You will see on the screen the grain of the G.G. Focus the XHA1 till the grain is sharp. Set you focus present on the XHA1.

After that you set the back focus of the Lens. The Brevis is one of the easiest to set because of the micro collimation function. See manual to set it. It is pretty easy.

After that, you only use the focus and zoom on the 35mm lens. If you ever move the XHA1 zoom or focus ring. just set the zoom or focus present that you have saved earlier.

I hope it helps...

Ates, the unit must have been damaged during shipping..and likely during a customs inspection that failed to replace it in the case properly. The bad news is that the switch is broken, the good news is that we're fedex'ing a replacement :-)
