Brevis + Cheap Nikons

Here is something I shot with a DVX + Brevis35 and a cheap no name brand lens with a Canon mount. There is a DVD version to download so you can see the full rez.

This weekend I will have footage with the same Brevis and lense setup but shot with an HVX and will probably post it during the week sometime.

Gorgeous footage, Aram!

getken,

seeing your test stills, are you sure you focused the GG perfectly with the brevis installed? Bloom's footage although not comparable because of different lighting levels and compression, looks superb, though your test stills show serious problems with relation to the hvx stock lens. i wonder.

This quaestion has been raised before. Because of the very low light situation and the fairly shallow depth of field it may appear that it is not in focus. Look at the plane of focus where the tomato is. That is where the focus is in every shot. But because of the very shallow DOF everything in front of and behind that plane is out of focus. It's an example of how critical focus can be in low light shallow DOF situations. Also, the Brevis used in that test was a Beta version, very early design and my first day testing it. The new ones (which I now have) rock!

Nudge, serious problems? Seriously. Phil's footage while more emotionally loaded actuallly has worse focus than getken's. The problem is you/I/we don't know where to look, is it the container, the bag, oh the tomato. I am looking at homeless man's eyes but his nose is in focus. Dude is a pro and knows how to use his tools. Perhaps you should try shooting with an adapter yourself before telling others their footage has serious problems.

disco robo if you read carefully what i mentioned, you wold see that "serious problems" referred to a comparable image rendered with a 35mm adapter on a test shoot. getken was happy to reply and certainly not insulted, as you were. Test shoots are useful and so is constructive criticism.

I'm not insulted I just get annoyed when someone who has never used a product feels they have the obligation to opine about it. Serious problems refers to what, grain/focus/dof/bokeh/vignetting? If you had any experience you'd realize that in some shots dude's working with anywhere from 8" to .5"dof, so yeah the composition is going to look soft, that's actually the point. Good Luck.
