Brevis CFXL with DVX : some minor problems

Hey guys,

A friend of mine borrowed my Brevis MP.1 adapter (with cinefuse XL) this weekend to do some DoF tests with his DVX100B.

He just called in today and stumbled upon two problems I hadn't heard of, and I'm wondering if anyone else here had the same. I know I haven't experienced any of them on my XL2, but I'd really appreciate any help towards this!

Here's what happens when using the Brevis with CFXL on his DVX :

1) Some strange grainy patterns show up around overexposed zones when they get really out-of-focus. I saw his footage on an HD TV, and the blur around the white zones looks really weird, as if the grain of the ground glass is affecting the blur. He knows not to open farther than f/4 with both camera and 35mm lens. I know this is minor since overexposing is usually a bad idea, but I'm concerned it might be an issue if I ever want to overexpose something in a scene that's out-of-focus. Could it be one of the limits of 35mm adapters? I'm not an expert since I only tried two (LetusXL and Brevis), so any help would be greatly appreciated.

2) On DVD, his DVX footage with no adapter looks great when compressed with Canopus ProCoder 2, but DVX footage with the Brevis and CFXL with the same encoder shows unusual blocky patterns all over out-of-focus areas. He hasn't shown me yet how it looks, do you guys think it might be the limitations of MPEG2 codecs? Has anyone else experienced compression problems with 35mm adapters? I'm really wondering why the codec would react that way to DVX+Brevis footage but not to normal DVX footage.

Could the cinefuse XL's grain pattern be the cause of such weird compression problems with ProCoder2 and overexposed blurs with patterns? I'm gonna do more thorough tests with my XL2 tonight just to be sure it's not the adapter (I'm crossing my fingers, since the adapter is barely 3 months old and hasn't seen much use), but for now I'm really at a loss as to what's causing these two problems...

I don't have any frame grabs yet, I'll try to upload 'em as soon as my friend sends some.

Thanks for your time, any help would be really appreciated!
