Brand New Lav Mic...Still Getting Frying/Noise!

I purchased a brand new Audio Technica Pro 70 Lav mic. I recorded a test in my studio (fairly quite environment) with the lav plugged directly into the back of my Canon XL2. It's running on phantom power (with the settings knob adjusted to about 9 out of 11). The level jumps at about 50-60%. Pretty basic. Nothing jumping out at me or sending up any red flags that could be wrong.

However, during the mixing there is definite frying/noise in the audio.

What would cause this in my setup? I've heard the preamp in the camera may not be the best, therefore I should record separately (but this would be a bit of a pain).

Any thoughts?

Well, you've got a cheap mic (If it says 'pro' on the box, it's not professional gear in the box), so you're not starting out your audio chain with great audio, but there's a few things to look at.

1. Are you monitoring the sound during the recording? If not, start doing that. Is the frying sound present while recording?
2. Try different cables, a different mic, a different recording device, different recording settings, etc. Take your time and go through the chain and figure out where your problems are coming from.
3. If there's nothing happening in the recording chain, do a similar thing with your editing/playback chain. Narrow it down until you find the source of the problem.
