Brag about your little one

I've reviewed the facts and decided to buy a little 1-ccd camera for use as a deck. I would like to get a panasonic, for battery and charger compatability ... but that's not necessarily priority number one.

I want to spend up to $350 on a simple little guy. So for those of you who have little camcorders in addition to the DVX - what makes yours special or why would/n't you buy the same one again? I'm sure if I have the thing, I'll wanna take it out and play with it, shoot a little movie, etc. So what should I get, and why? Since this would be a toy, image quality and low light response are not necessarily numbers one and two. Does any of these cheapies give a distinctive picture, or have a funny feature or great OIS, or anything else that might not be immediately apparent?

I have a Canon zr-20 that I use as a deck and camera. (I think they are up to the 90 now) The main reason I chose it was, at the time it was the only camera i could find that had analog in. So I could capture and edit my old HI-8 tapes through the zr-20 via firewire. Plus, it been great for shooting the kids.

I have a Canon Elura 50 and it is tiny and cute etc. but it is horrible.

I had to send it to the factory service center after 3 months or something, and I think it is broken again. :-[
the firewire port was broken after 3 uses, and I found out later that Canon is very infamous for bad DV ports.
Do not buy tiny cute camcorders if you are going to get it as a DV deck. But big rugged ugly ones. They break down less.

Re: Brag about your little one

Collier, I have had a Panasonic NV-DSS55 for about 5 years & love it. I have only had DVX for a few months, there is an obvious quality improvement but the little one still holds up. When I got DVX my dealer was amazed that the batteries were the same! Has multi media card, progressive Photoshot, Picture in Picture etc. Used it last year on daughters wedding alongside brother's Sony & it left the Sony for dead. :D great for using as a deck. Thats my brag!

Re: Brag about your little one

canon? I might be mistaken but shouldn't you stick with a Panasonic brand camera/deck because of the wet/dry tape issues? If it's not good to change tape brands do you want to change deck brands too? Educate me please. ;D

Re: Brag about your little one

i use a panasonic gs-9 for a deck.paid about 350 bucks for it.also used it as a second cam as a static wide shot for some things as a cutaway cam.matched up fine with a pd170.

What about wet/dry lube decks? Is there a difference from manufacturer to manufacturer?

Re: Brag about your little one

I'd suggest a GS9 too. YOu can get them new at circuit city for 288$. YOu can also get an in store warranty for ~$70 which will give you a perfectly working camera for 3 years, guaranteed, unless you drop it.:)

Re: Brag about your little one

I use the same tapes in both my canon and my panasonic. I think the wet/dry issue is limited to the tapes, not the heads.

Re: Brag about your little one

i use a sony i think its the trv-19?

it works just fine BUT i wasn't paying attention when i bought it, it does NOT do analog in.

what is the SMALLEST camera out there that does analog in?

i have a lipstick camera and i need something really small so if i have someone tape it onto their clothing or safety gear it won't get in the way.

i want to use it for action stuff like circus performers etc.

Re: Brag about your little one

I have a Panasonic GS9.  No problem with the firewire port, but the video out is a little finicky.  I use it to drive a monitor while editing as well, so the video out is helpful.  It takes a second to shift from pause to frame by frame forward or reverse.  But it is cheap and much much better than flogging the heads on my DVX.  I have a couple hundred hours on the GS9 heads that I'm glad I don't have on the DVX.  If it died, I'd buy another one just like it.

No analog in, though.

Re: Brag about your little one

a while back i read in some consumer computing type magazine that there was a panasonic coming out that was 3 chip that really cheap. i forget the exact price but i'm thinking for it to have stuck in my mind so much it must have been +/- $1000

anyone know anything about that?

Re: Brag about your little one

I use a VX1000 as a deck, real cool camera, its older, but it gets the job done.

Re: Brag about your little one

I got a Canon ZR 80 to use as a deck and it's been great so far. If I use it as a camera, I use the same tape I use with my DVX. I shot with it on my last vacation and I was happy with it -- fit in my cargo pocket too.
