Hey guys,

Im planning to use a PC laptop as a field monitor. What type of hardware and software do I need for this?

I like something on the inexpensive side since this isnt my laptop and I dont want to invest in something that isnt mine. Any suggestions?

thanks

if it has a 1394 port you could just install your NLE and use the full size capture window if it has one . or you could install DVrack.

It depends - what type of thong? What size of the bra? What's inside is what counts.

What's the point? The colors won't be accurate and it will (probably) not be full frame rate.

I personally would look for a Toshiba 14" Flat TV with S-video input. It's a very nice choice.
...And should cost about the same or less than a Firewire Cardbus adapter and software.

Umm - how is a 14" flat TV with S-Video input better than a laptop? Okay - DVRack + Firewire might cost you a bit more than a TV. But you'll get the ability to calibrate your monitor, monitor your audio&video, set proper white balance and sharpness with the software, have your footage captured right into you hard drive (with a backup on the camera tape), see the full frame with underscan, set pretty much any aspect ratio you want...

With a TV, you get no proper color calibration, only one aspect ratio (unless it's a more expensive model), no underscan, no nothing.

I think it's a no-brainer.

DVRack is different, of course. I was referring to spending $140 on something the original poster could keep and use instead of buying a Firewire card for his friends laptop that he can't keep and using some capture utility other than DV Rack. That particular model is pretty good and you can add blue only with a $3 pair of THX optimizer glasses. The computer without DVRack offers very little in terms of increasing framerate if it lags and very little color calibration.. He may not want to spend hundreds of dollars to accessorize a computer that doesn't belong to him, so I offered a different option. Guess I'll keep my mouth shut.

I'll defend you Wells, you gave a fair answer given the obvious financial constraints placed on the question by dizkotec.

Hey guys, no need to get defensive. It's fair answer, for sure.

I must admit to a terrible mistake: I read the first line of Dizkoteck's post, and then thisiswells's. Missed the stuff about the laptop not being his. Since I love DVRack, I thought that would be a better solution.

Well - in that case, I've got a flat screen 10" monitor they sell at Radioshack for video games and portable DVD players. It's a smaller than 14" TV, but not usable for much else... :( . It takes S-Video IN, and it's in 16:9 if you like shooting wide screen.

Hey guys, thanks for the response.. no need to fight here :)

well the solution i have is installing Premiere into his PC and going through it with firewire. At least I hope he has firewire. Must...talk....to....him.
Breakfast time!

Oh and the only use for this monitor is framing and seeing himself perform while I use the DVX lcd. Talent, sooo vain :)

I have the toshiba 14", and its a great little monitor for the money.

Can someone elaborate on where I can get the "THX optimizer glasses" for the blue only? Thanks!
