Bought a House

Sad - that is one cozy homestead. Love bath, the woodwork, very nice. Any original paintings/sketches up on the wall?

Brandon - In Palmdale you'll live about less than an hour's drive from me, I'm further north and the houses are really cheap up here. Bunch of military personnel and retired cops, military personnel, etc.

We accepted the counter offer, now we'll see how escrow goes!!

Charli, are you in Cal City? Yeah that's way too far North for us. We work in Lancaster and like to travel down to LA during the weekends or whatever, and we have family in Santa Clarita. Cal City or Mojave is too far North for us :)

Welcome to the fun!

For my part I'd rather perform an appendectomy on myself with a rusty sardine can lid than go through the process again. On the bright side, your closing can't possibly be but quicker and easier...

...I was really struck by how much more complicated, intrusive, paperwork-intensive and time-consuming the process is now, compared to when I last bought back in 1993.

California City is great for skydiving. And...did I mention the skydiving?

haha yeah, not really looking forward to the whole thing, but it seems like it should be pretty cut and dry, though I know nothing is anymore...

I am new to all this, so I don't have anything to compare it to, but it seems they give the buyer as many "outs" as possible? And the amount of information to give in order to just make an offer is ridiculous.

Well, you become semi-committed when you open escrow and put down your good-faith 3% - during the escrow period (30, 60, 90 days, whatever) it's up to you to do all of your due diligence with inspections etc, and if you decide to withdraw your offer you can, within that period - but if you go over, the seller has the right to keep your deposit and terminate the process (which almost happened to us, thanks to the @%^&^! bank deciding to pull the loan on the very day of funding; I had to write the 20% down with my own money rather than the cash out of our present property, which did *not* put me in a good mood...)

If you think the amount of info they demanded up to now is silly, just wait...if you want to speed things along, have your IRS, bank, employment and financial records all ready to go, plus proof-of-citizenship, birth certificate/social security card, retinal pattern, tongue print, and colon scan...

lol. Yeah we already gave those things, aside from the birth certificates.

From what I understand we have 10 days that we can withdraw for anything at all. Once that passes, if we withdraw we lose our deposit to the seller. I want to get the loan stuff done ASAP as I know that is usually what fraks things up.

I love the millwork in those Craftsman style houses. We're in a '35 colonial revival in NC, but being from California, I'll always have a soft spot for those Arts and Crafts / Bungalow styled houses.

Do you know where your house came from - the builder, or if it is a catalogue model?

We haven't found our's, but my 11-year-old and I have been researching at the local library's archive and scouring the Interweb for something that's a precise match. At the moment, we've got the names of the owners of every house in our neighborhood back through 1932. It's a fun project to undertake with the kids.

This Sears home is very close to ours...but the one we're in had the sun porch enclosed into a conservatory and there is an ell that goes out beyond the kitchen and upstairs bedroom another ten feet or so.

10 days? You must be on some other kind of deal. Or a ten-day escrow, which is insane...

...yes, those loan idjits damn near queered the deal, for us.

I'm sure mortgage brokers aren't screwing anyone anymore.

Speaking of mortgage brokers - unsolicited shout out for Tom Nitsan at MPR Financial in the Bay Area if anyone needs a broker who will go to the ends of the earth for you.

Brandon - California City, yep, it's wayyyyyyyyyy to far north for me. But dirt cheap is what we need right now. Nothing out here but tumble weeds and spiders. If you do any filming this fall/winter let me know, might help you guys out, lug cables or something.

Sad - skydiving. Geez, the UPS guy just dropped off curtain rods and I could 'feel' the heat on his body. He didn't even ask me to sign off on the thing, he just wanted to go and get out of the heat, poor guy.

Month to month rental here. Stay until my financial fog clears, then I'm outta here.

Nice place, and congratulations.

Although I understand the responsibility and financial issues involved in being a homeowner, I have always looked at our house as a home first...and an investment about fourth or fifth.

There are few things more important in life than having a sanctuary.

We don't know when the housewarming's going to be...at least a couple of months. I have to get back to L.A., we have to complete the move-out, then the move-in...

Charli, once you reach about 16,000' it hardly matters how hot is is at ground level; it's *always* cold up there. You warm up as you descend...

Sad - then while you're descending on Cal City, bring a frying pan and some eggs, by the time you land you'll have breakfast ready, no joke.

Not to steal your thunder or anything, but thought ya'll would want to see the photo of the house we're now in escrow on.
