Borders & Multiple Frames

I have seen a few videos which have multi borders in a shot each border frame showing different videos and I wanted to try this effect on AE7. Here are a few picture frames so you can get a general idea.

After Effects is a very deep program that's not intuitive. Learning the basics will get you up to speed quickly. The Meyers are experts in teaching AE here's their latest book:
http://www.amazon.com/After-Effects-Apprentice-DV-Expert/dp/0240809386/sr=8-1/qid=1170014380?ie=UTF8

In the second example you posted above:

1. import the 2 video clips into AE (man in field and flowers)
2. select new composition from the composition menu
3. when the composition settings window pops up choose a preset that matches your footage. example: NTSC DV, 720 x 480
4. place the clip of the man in the field in the timeline
5. hit the p key, this will reveal the position properties (x,y)
6. click on the x property and drag to the left. the man in the field will move as you drag the mouse. stop dragging when the man is in the proper position.
7. place the flowers clip in the timeline above the man in the field clip
8. select the rectangular mask tool and draw a mask around the flowers and bees
9. hit the p key again to reveal the position properties of the flower clip
10. click on the x property and drag the flower clip until it butts up against the right side of the frame.
11. choose add to render que fro the composition menu.
12. render out your movie with the same codec as your original clips.
13. import into your NLE and admire your creation.

For something simple like this split screen it's probably easier to handle it within the NLE. For more complex composites (multiple frames animating) AE is the right tool for the job.

hey milksac. thank you for taking the time and actually posting a quick tutorial. will send you the results. graciasl.

I would do it a little differently. Instead of playing with the position on the timeline, why not just drag the clip in the monitor window? Also, I would drag the first clip onto the 'make new comp' button to preserve the right frame rate, aspect and size

Thank you Claw. Final question. How would I make these 2 videos have a rounded rectangle corner? Like the photo sample below?

you can do what he said, add the two layers to ur compsotion, but grab the pen tool and make mask around it, and curve the corners, theres another way , easier, but i dont no how to do it lol

but like he said, final cut, adobe premiere, sony vegas, or any other nle, u can achieve this same effect, alot easier and quicker

in final cut (or adobe)

you can just have the video on the track, and add the other video u want in the same shot, ontop of the video, so you over lap it. Then double click (final cut) or single click(pemire) and then go to the z position, or y depending wut u want, and movie it over.

If you have Adobe Illustrator you can draw a box with rounded corners and import the file into AE to use as a track matte or mask shape.

If you have Adobe Photoshop you can draw a white box on a black background. Then use the gausian blur filter until the edges of the box are very soft. Now adjust the levels so that the shadows, midtones and highlights are tightly spaced (pretty much on top each other). This increase in contrast will sharpen the image back up giving you a box with rounded corners. You can use the final image as a track matte in AE.

If you don't have Illustrator or PS you can register at the DMN site and download the bullnose mask plug at this site:

The good news is it's free. However the page has been up for years so I don't know if it still works or not. It's worth a shot.
