looking to buy my 1st boom. saw various alum/carbon gitzo & k-tek.

i'm not looking for super lengths. mostly used for talking head interviews in office spaces. how long is long enough?

i saw various models with and w/o internal cabling. one of the folks at the audio house suggested that internal cabling often gets twisted w/in the boom preventing the boom from easily collapsing.

i can see the usefulness of internal cabling but i can also see the ease of external cabling and a few velcro straps.

so, all u audio folks, how long is long? thoughts on internal cabling?

thanks in advance

be well

You pay a premium for an internal cabled k-tek. If you have the money, they are great though. I went with the 12' carbon fiber gitzo pole and I love it. You can't beat it for $280. That is my suggestion. You always need more reach.

Depends on your tastes and situation. Internal cable is a huge advantage in ENG situations where you need to collapse and expand a lot. External allows for quicker and jerkier movements w/o cable slap. Often an advantage in narratives.

My most recent boomop only uses internal, my last one generally preferred external. I think generally freshmen boomops like the internal for its convience.

Over time the coiled cable will get twisted, just remove the end cap, with pole in a vertical position, drop cap to the floor, and bounce the cable up and down, nature does the rest.

I wouldn't get less the 12' if you are only planning to get one pole.

Cheers
