But always try to fix it yourself also because light doesn't care (in a way) about sound, so they like it when you also try to solve shadow problems.

I'd really be careful of this. I'll only speak for myself but I know whether I'm on big jobs or small 3 man jobs I could never
just take it upon myself to fix it myself. That would be treading on some very dangerous ground of 1. doing someone elses job. 2. making that
person feel as if he isn't doing his job correctly. 3. altering what the DP/Gaffer was going for. 4..etc
I agree that it absolutely helps to know the solution to the problem before you just yell "I have a shadow!"
but asking the other dept if they could put a cutter up for you because you know that will solve the issue
is a far cry from grabbing a stand and doing it yourself.
I know I'd be pissed as hell if a gaffer walked over and grabbed my pole and tried to show me how to boom without getting a shadow.
