are boom poles pretty standards all the way around... i'm looking to pay 250 tops... and i'm looking for positive and negative experience warnings...

i'm assuming i'll have to go aluminum in that price range which is fine... also i would imagine getting a 10-12 footer would be good cause i love wide shots, and also its better to be too long than too short

so what should/shouldn't i buy?

Absolutely. They used the be the official partner of this site, it is now Able but EVS is still an awesome site. Several of their people and former people are members of this site.

Not to hijack, but can anyone recommend a boom pole for a price of under $100? I don't quite see the benefit of a super expensive one other than low weight and length.

Would I have do have a DIY boompole to be sub-$100?

my oktava is on the way. if i were to go the home depot route, how would i attach the mic to the pole?

If a cheap but good boom pole is what you are after, look no further:

My brother got one about a month ago and he absolutely loves it. And, with the most simple of alterrations, he was able to thread the cable internally.

For the price, I wouldn't entertain any silly notions of a DIY rig. Don't embarass yourself in front of a client with some Home Depot lightbulb changer. Have some self respect and buy real gear.

Silly notions? I painted mine black and it looks pro. Spend the extra $80 if you have it. That pole is great too. It's up to you and the numbers in your bank account. Good luck!

Just a note...The Oktava picks up noise very easily..especially the boom handlers noise..that is why a lot of people recommend the Ktek shockmount to reduce noise. So going the home depot route should be taken with caution.

What color did you paint your DIY camera?

Sound is one of the key elements to telling a story. I certainly would NOT go a DIY unless you have the equipment to make a complete replica. I always find many high quality second hand boom poles sitting at the dealers I use here in Tokyo. In fact I have two that I paid no more than $100 for. When I made larger purchases in the past I would go in and say this is what I want, how about you throw in that used pole for $100 on the deal. Usually they say yes sure.

FYI - I painted the DIY camera pink. But on some nights I feel like blue or green. Then, at times, I really go wild and just like to insult other people with silly notions. How silly of me?

Gauranga,
I really feel the love from your posts. I think you'll make a great Anti-DIY... He he!

On a not so silly note and out of curiosity -- Has anyone here ever used a DIY boom pole? What kind of experiences have they had? I used mined and there was no handling noise do to the shock mount that I have with the rode ntg-1. I even walked with it and all. I guess it depends on your mic and the operator.
