Boom Pole option

I intern at audio place and they have a lot of everything . I was taking look at the boom poles . Which boom Pole do you think would be the best. I used k-teks grafite poles I like them a lot. I want to go with the boompole with the cable inside. Is there a reason why I shouldn't?? What would be the prices I should expect for this kind of boompole. Also I wanted to know which gloves are the best to use for the boompole during the summer and then winter?

Well I can only speak about the Ktek. I bought one a few months ago and so far have been quite impressed. I bought the 152 with an internal coiled cable and right angle jack. It reaches 12'10" which has repetedly saved the day on a TV show I am currently working on. Unless you are doing exclusively run and gun I would highly recomend a pole at will hit 12 feet. Like I said, I really can't compare this pole to others, but I am someone who believes in getting what you pay for. Also for the fact that you have little experiance I doubt one manufacturer over the next is going to make a big difference for you. Get the one that meets the specs you want and can get a good deal on. Some people are not hip to coiled cables, mine is nice and quite and fast as well, the clutches don't take much to tighten. I got exactly what I wanted and have not looked back. Have fun.

i JUST received my ktek 152ccr

this is the same one droog mentioned...

so far i really like it. its a lot thicker than my gitzo pole that i used previously.

but for starting out you might want to look at the gitzo.

you can get a 9 ft carbon one without internal cabling for around $200

big difference between that and the ktek 152ccr that is a little less than $700!

btw, is it normal for the ktek to droop a little bit if you have it fully extended with a 416 and a ktek zeppelin on the other end?

my gitzo never flexed.

I was wondering is there a way of buying boom pole with out of coil cable but having option of coil cable exiting from the side of the pole and not the bottom.? Like getting ktek 152ccr but with out of the cable? I believe the place where I intern they have those I will take a look at it.

Yeah, the droop in your pole is normal (or so my wife keeps telling me :embarasse). Sorry, couldn't resist. It is normal but remember to not fully extend the pole, leave a little bit in the shaft to strengthen the joint.

Cheers

Around the local area I have now spoken to a couple of different working pros and both were using Panamic poles which apparently have a fibre mesh around the pole sections. They said the mesh makes the Panamic poles less susceptable to handling noise and increases their repatoire of moves.

they are quit good for the long ones if you dont have to hold it - weight more then others , but not so comfortable as for eng or doco 2.5-3.5 meters .
prefer the k-tek and ambient

That explains why these guys both look as though "hand me the piano" is part of their everyday vocabulary.

Hey Oleg,

Have you ever worked with a VDB pole? They look interesting, but I've seen too many threads on RAMPS with people talking about having to completely strip them down and clean them due to the carbon fiber dust getting in the locking collars.

dont touch the **** , i still have a couple and dont find the suckers to hook it .
they are good for the vegetarians only , in seattle aria :-)

Hey there, I use K-tek and so does Charles...I think. And it is just a coincidence that I am a vegatarian. Plenty of Seattlites are carnavores. :)

yes that was about Charles
( sorry guys that is a ramps joke)

I took out this 12 feet k-tech with coil cable and side output. I will test it during this weekend on the project that I'm doing. I never worked with a boom pole that long I know it will be usefull.

that is the same one i just bought.

the 152ccr

the right angle is great because you don't have to worry about putting the pole down as much and you just setup the cable to be pointing straight down and keep an eye on that when you extend the pole so the boom mic is pointing pretty much the same way or you'll always be struggling with the cable pulling on the pole.

its really nice to have the extra reach and i'm still getting used to the larger diameter. this pole is a different than my gitzo which was very thin.

Matt has said this many times and I have said it once or twice but I'll say it again. Not only does K-Tek make great products, they are made here in the U.S.

So when you buy one of their products you are supporting a small family run American company (which there are fewer and fewer of these days) and the people that run the company are incredibly nice and give great customer service. I've got a K-Tek 110CC Avalon with side XLR and I'm reallly happy that I gave them my money and know if anything goes wrong they will take care of me. They also now make fuzzys and they cost less than the Rycotes. Got one of those as well.

Do us all a favor and help keep them in business. And no, I'm not related to them or an employee. And while I'm at it. The Sound Room. Another small family business with great service. Bought my Oktava from them (becasue of Matt) and they were the greatest plus they give a DVX User discount. Can't get any better.

i love my ktek pole and the ktek zeppelin package is a great deal.

i just got one of the weights to put on the end to help counterbalace the mic/shockmount and it works great!

i ordered a second weight (they are piggybackable) because with the 416 on the end with the ktek zeppelin if you go more than 8 feet in length you need 2 of the weights to balance the boom.

but it really does work and it is a LOT less strain to just hold the boom pole level than it is to hold the end of it as a lever trying to hold up the weight just at the end of the pole.

matthew

can you give the link to those wejghts I don't think I ever seen this . How much is the zeplin package??
