Boom microphone...

When I'm using the boom mic, should I turn off the camera's internal microphone? I'm gonna connect a boom a mic to the my dvx100b, should i turn off the other mics? Internal mic or the other mic connector? Hope that's clear and not confusing. lol

plug the boom into xlr channel 2 and set both input swiches under the lcd to channel 2, then you can run one level slightly lower than the other to guard against peaks.

The on camera built in mic is only on if the inputs arew set to R or L or both. You could also record a boom on one channel and the on camera on the other.

So I could just lower the levels of the other one? Basically, I'm shooting....soon and I need to know exactly what to watch out for in terms of audio. I have a panasonicbvx100bp. I'm connecting the BOOM directly to the camera. I want to make sure things run smoothly.

if you are recording input two (the boom) onto input 1 and 2, you could have one cannel set slightly lower in case something much louder overdrives the input and causes clipping (goes into the last red vertical bar). Your normal peaks should be past the first white vertical bar ie: you should see one or two occasional peaks of red horizontal bars.

Having the boom mic on Input 2 and keeping the Internal mic on Input 1 saved me on a recent shoot when there was too much noise on the boom mic in a couple shots. I had the internal mic as a decent backup.

If we had better monitoring and boom operation, then I guess setting Input 2 to both channels with different levels would have been a good play, instead.

sounds like you need a mixer(SD Mixpre) and carbon fiber boom (Gitzo 12'5") and k-tek kssm shockmount (assuming you have the Oktava).
