Thanks man, it just looks so simple that i felt that it might just be a 'gimmicky' piece of kit that you would use once and then just end up buying a mic stand...

Thanks ripple!

That looks like something slightly more trust worthy and i'll take your word for it on its performance!

hah performance ;) its a piece of metal ;)

I have seen a few newer ones people have that are a little smaller in the opening..still workable but not quite as quick to get in and out as mine.

For 10 bux try it out.

What so for attachment do you use??? do you mount it on a light stand... i cant figure out what that threaded bolt would mount onto.

C-stand gobo head

So you save how much over a BoomBuddy if you buy a gobohead along with your fishing pole holder?
I bought the BB for my ultra portable interview kit and it´s smaller and lighter than a gobohead with rod holder or the skyhook, which I´ve used before.
But for booming a fullbody wide shot, the griphead solution will probably be more sturdy.

uhhh you obviously bought a stand to put your boombuddy? on as well. How much did that cost in addition to your holder?

BUT.. I have NEVER been on a shoot where there hasnt been C stands available if
I need to use one of the grip trucks, but I do happen to own my own as well
for when I dont want to bother the grip dept or company im working for.

A c stand on a video shoot is a pretty common item. Today there were about 20 of them. I borrowed 4 to hang sound blankets..
last job I did..there were at least 30 and I didnt feel comfortable with the crew to ask for 1, so I brought my own in.

Its a good stand to have anyway, but no matter what holder you have you need SOME stand to put it on of course, why not
go with a standard.

Oh dear the boom buddy looks too small to me. NTG-3/WS6/shockmount on carbon fibre boom out at 12feet might be a worry ... no?

Hi Rippie, how do you rate the distance between the boom supports of the Driftmaster, over something like this.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/con...sories&A=details&Q=&sku=277231&is=REG#reviews

Obviously it depends on the weights you hold stand down with but do you have to be careful setting the DM up for a *long* boom throw ie: have heavier weights always available etc. What mic/boom/length do you generally run with?

Would you recommend the shape of the above? I'm looking to make one. All insights appeciated Thx.
Cheers.

Raster, I'll only give you my own personal experience.
I have never had an issue the fishing rod holder..at any extension.

Doesn't even enter my mind. The only thing that Im personally concerned with
is an actual stand tipping over. (which is why I use a c stand, big leg towards the weight!)
I usually bag it if I have a fear of it tipping.

Of course I try to use as short as possible for many reasons, but ive been 13ft
out countless times as well. I tend to use a stand more indoors than out so its usually without a zep.

If you're thinking extreme wides, I personally wouldnt be using a stand anyway
because there is probably a reason for an extreme wide in that the person
will be moving. shifting..etc.

I just got back from directing a shoot in Seattle and such a device (specifically a BB? Unknown) was used, and it was great. Mounted on sandbagged c-stand w/ arm + head on a 12' aluminum boom pole. Totally worth it. It was holding a Schoeps CMIT5u, so if it's good enough for a pro to hold a $2k shotgun mic, well... ;-) (PS: It wasn't mine, if only..!)
