Books from the ASC

Have any of you bought from them? I'd think it was safe to assume they know what they're talking about, but...

Anyway, two in particular:

ASC Film Manual - 9th Edition
http://www.theasc.com/cgibin/store/acsstore.cgi?user_action=detail&catalogno=10109

ASC Video Manual - 3rd Edition
http://www.theasc.com/cgibin/store/acsstore.cgi?user_action=detail&catalogno=10203#

Any good? Worth the money?

NB: I've already got these
  • Producing Great Sound for Digital Video
  • Lighting for Digital Video & Television
  • Film Directing Shot by Shot : Visualizing from Concept to Screen
  • The Five C's of Cinematography: Motion Picture Filming Techniques
  • Rebel Without a Crew: Or How a 23-Year-Old Filmmaker With $7,000 Became a Hollywood Player
  • $30 Film School
  • Nuts and Bolts Filmmaking : Practical Techniques for the Guerilla Filmmaker

Re: Books from the ASC

There is a reason the American Cinematographer Manual looks like a bible...

and this is because it is the bible.

Re: Books from the ASC

yeah, I have the 8th edition of the ASC manual and it is extremely handy. Very informative, worth the $99.

Re: Books from the ASC

The ASC manual is one of the best $100.00 I've spent. It has most all the relevant film topics and some on video. I recommend it to everyone that is serious about the craft. :D

Okey-doke, then. I know what to say to Mom when she asks what I want for my birthday. :)

No offense to anyone here who finds it valuable but I wouldn't necessarily say the ASC book. It is designed for filmmaking, not necessarily video and while it might be fun to read, 90% of what is in it would have little to do with folks on this board, their camera or how it operates. Save your money for a light or a book like Jack Jackmans, or any of the books mentioned above, or my seminars on lighting and learn how to light.

Re: Books from the ASC

I bought the Reflections plus Painting with light combo. While the latter never did anything for me, Reflections sure rules!
