Hey guys,
Does anyone know where I could find any books or even better, DVD's on Cinematography? I find a lot of books on filmmaking in general, but can't seem to find much on the art of Motion Photography... I would like to better understand and learn lighting setups, proper exposure, etc...

Help is appreciated!
Thanks,

I remember people saying that the Hollywood Camerawork DVD set is pretty great. It's basicaly what you are looking for. The only thing that would possibly stop you from getting it would be the price, it's somewhere in the $250 neighborhood (after DVXuser discount.) Also, I'd like to point out that the Flip DVD contains some information on general cinematorgaphy as well, and it's much cheaper! =)

If you are looking to learn technical information as opposed to the aesthetic of cinematography then go with Cinematography: Image Making for Cinematographers, Directors, and Videographers by Blain Brown. Very heady info, sometimes it can be overwhelming but a great, great read none the less. Also, check out American Cinematographer by Stephen H. Burum, great info there. Check 'em out.

Does any of these books cover Lighting setups? Thats what I primarily want to knoe about, different lighting setups for different looks. It would be cool if there was a DVD that showed you a scene and then had a diagram of how the lighting was setup. Information on proper exposure of film/ HD, etc.

"Cinematography: Image making..." is a great book on proper film exposure and has so much info on the actuall film itself. It really teaches you what you need to know when exposing for film. At only $30 on Amazon.com, you get so much. More than what you pay for.
As for lighting set-ups, it doesn't teach you as much, but more about the lights themselves. There are a few good books on lighting set-ups, but I can't name any off the top of my head.

I think i know what you are looking for::)

Walter Graph has new DVDs about lighting particular subjects. One such DVD is completed and others are either ready or almost.

Walter is a member of DVXuser so you should find out about the DVDs through looking at his posts etc. This should also get you some feedback from others.

Hope this helps. I am looking myself for a DVD that would show you some things about DOF and manual focusing etc. If you or anyone knows such a DVD let me know. I Have loads of books already on the subject.

Michael
