Bolex D16: RAW, 16/Super 16 sensor size, costs less than MkIII

^ I agree with everything said.

However, it's quite clear that this camera could be used in more... 'capable' hands. The demo video with the girl reading the book is nothing extraordinary in image or concept.

I'm banking on the fact, in more capable hands, we will see more intriguing images. I'm giving the benefit of the doubt for now. With that said, one major advantage I am excited for is CCD. Do you know what that means?

I can run around like a lunatic and there will be no skew. No jello vision. Also, flash frames, such as photography bulbs, and other severely fast motions or events will be captured progressive. Hell yeah. Even our Red Epic chops up a photography flash... can't wait to have a true progressive camera again. One of the reasons I am still in love with the HPX170! Now this is no cam-killer in my opinion, but simply one great strength to a very cool concept camera.

+1

I hate to be the one to be negative but August sounds really optimistic when you consider that another startup with deep pockets still can't produce a reliable camera after how long has it been? 3 years? But hey I'm much more inclined to spend $2500 on a beta camera than $30,000.

This is the fastest Kickstarter funding I've seen. Boy, those pledge slots for the camera are disappearing tootin' fast.

No more fence-sitting; jumped in! 2K for 2.5K. Exciting times for digital cinema!

Is it August yet?!?!?

What happens if the projected release date gets pushed back really far or some component doesn't make it to the final version, is there a way to get your money refunded? How big of a risk is this?

  • [h=4]What do I do if I miss my Estimated Delivery Date?[/h] The Estimated Delivery Date is intended to set expectations for backers on when they will receive rewards. Setbacks are common to any project, and creative ones especially. When the unforeseen occurs, creators are expected to post a Project Update explaining the situation. Sharing the story, speed bumps and all, is part of the Kickstarter experience.
Creators who are honest and transparent will find backers to be far more forgiving. We’ve all felt the urge to avoid things when we feel bad about them, but leaving backers in the dark makes them assume the worst. It not only reflects badly on the project, it’s disrespectful to the support that community has given and to other Kickstarter creators. Regular communication is a must.

  • [h=4]If I am unable to complete my project as listed, what should I do?[/h] If you are unable to fulfill the promises made to backers, cannot complete the project as advertised, or decide to abandon the project for any reason, you are expected to cancel funding. A failure to do so could result in damage to your reputation or even legal action on behalf of your backers.

i'm not familiar with US law but i guess if you fail to deliver a kickstarter funded project, people can sue you and you're probably liable for the full amount. if you create an LLC (limited liability company) for the project the company is liable up to a certain sum (in switzerland it's 20k for an LLC)

Yikes, yolk! Don't let the air out of the room just yet! :) They (... as a backer can I say "we"?) still gotta get to $250K for the additional mount & software!

oh no, you got me wrong. i wish them all the success, i just answered the question. we backed them too ;)

Adobe already natively supports cinema DNG in CS5.5 apps. Even the new version Lightroom 4 does. DNG is Adobe's universal raw digital negative archival format.

I got that info from DigitalBolex Kickstarter page. Here it is what they are saying :

MILESTONES
$100,000 is the bare minimum we need to produce the first batch of cameras. If we reach $200,000 we can include a suite of post-processing software with the camera package to manage RAW workflow. If we reach $250,000 we'll include an additional mount of your choice to anyone who buys a camera.

I did not know that CS5.5 can handle DNG footage. I stopped upgrading my CS series after CS5.0. Are there any downloadable DNG footage around the web ? After all I think this is a compelling reason for upgrade to CS6

I can't possible read ALL the posts on this so far. My 76 year old dad got a huge kick out of this as all our 50's & 60's home movies were shot on a Bolex b8 which i have right here. The 'onboard' viewfinder (may i call it an 'action finder?) seems pretty low rez, so is this the retro 4K point and shoot all you kids have been dreaming of? In my world that crank is divine. Let's pretend it charges an on-board Lithium Ion battery (does it?)
Anyway, this line put me over the edge....
"this is why we need a foveon video camera!"

Just hope it's not an elaborate exercise in Shilling for the Suckers ;(

Hahaha! Doubt it. It is likely just a digital rotary encoder. Probably just spins forever and sends electronic signals... however a crank charge for battery would be a cool idea.

I dunno guys. In the real world my real name is dirt just cause I shared a beer with a real scammer one time. yup! been there and still have daggers in me arse to prove it. Just seen too much hype to buy in. Besides, am i the only person that feels that all the heat that Canon & Nikon are getting for failing to deliver 4K 10Bit Uncompressed out, over 30 minutes... yada yada from a full size sensor at below $3,500 price-point, with lens seems a bit passé after this Bolex announcement?
I smell rotten mackerel. Sorry.
Philip Bloom adds no comfort I'm afraid.

Proof that the world is a wonderfully strange place: The "DV Rebel" is now the wise old voice of reason:

;-)

Interesting article. I've been on both sides of that equation. I've worked my guts out and invested tens of thousands of dollars for years only to "go belly up". (And have nothing to show for it....)

I've also been surrounded by "nay-sayers" battling against the odds and against everyone's "we're sure it can't be done", only to deploy a solution that completely changed the landscape. (I'm deploying a software solution at my job right now that was "impossible" only 11 months ago....)

So....time will tell.

Here's some things that would say are "different" than what Ikonoskop did when deploying their camera.
1. Off the shelve hardware is faster than it was in 2004. (That's right, I looked it up on their site, please correct me if I'm wrong, but that was a lllooooooong time ago in "tech years".) Off the shelf hardware is fast enough to handle a much higher bit rate. Faster than Ikonoskop's custom built hardware from 2004? I dunno, but there's a much better chance now, that's for sure!

2. Digital Bolex isn't aiming at being a "Professional Super 16 camera". Or so it would appear. It looks like they're aiming for people like me. I'd just love to shoot 12bit, 444, RAW footy for under 3K. Even if I can only shoot ISO400. Even if the file sizes are staggering. Even if the final look is kinda "grungy", and if I don't have shallow DOF. YEP! I'm their guy. (And apparently 100 other peeps in the first 24 hrs....) I'll put up with some nonsense ....as long as I get those things. Ikonoskop was aiming for the Moon. Red Camera Company was aiming for world domination. Digital Bolex seems to be aiming for "a start". There are some major sacrifices, but clearly some of us don't care as long as they get a few things right.

3. The "Hack" influence. Hacked GH1, GH2, GF1, GF2, T2i, 5DMII, 60D, 50D...etc. Some of us are now conditioned for the reality that a camera's current state....may NOT be it's FINAL STATE. I remember when the GH1 had "gone the way of the Do-Do bird"...and Vitaily brought it back with a VENGEANCE!!! Some of us are now TOTALLY FINE looking at a camera's image as long as we can help make it BETTER, ON THE FIRMWARE ITS SELF!!!! I'm hoping that they will leave this thing open enough that WE CAN ALL HELP OUT and make it the best that it can be...much like the ever improving GH2. (I know some folks will throw rocks....whatever....I'm not a fan boy, I don't even own one, but that's not to say that I won't, lol)

These people could totally get their BUTTS KICKED....and if they do, fair enough. But here's to them for trying!!!! And here's to them having succeeded on deploying a BETA!!! Even though it clearly has work to do....cheers to Digital Bolex!

Mad love to DVXUsers everywhere!!!
