Bolex D16: RAW, 16/Super 16 sensor size, costs less than MkIII

@manakiin
ccd does look much better , more analog look.
bolex digital look softer than acam.
perhaps they use stronger olpf filter than dll.
but your right we need to see raw files before we can make decision.

RAW cameras don't apply sharpening. It is up to you to decide on amount.

You can also choose sharper/contrastier lenses if you seek sharp look.

Philips interview shines a ton of light on this. Looks like it's coming soon and very legit. Answered a lot of questions I had on it.
They're a very transparent group and totally opposite of the big corporation structure. *better catch'em now before they get too big*

Not to mention that since it shoots at 2k, you don't need sharpening really. It's already an oversampled image, which more than makes up for any sharpening (desire for better resolution) you need.

there is not sharpening in raw but u need olpf on sensor to reduced moire and aliasing and too strong filter can kill resolution .
example olympus e5 is 12 MP and give same or better resolution than gh2 because it uses very light olpf .

Sensible OLPF doesn't have such a strong effect on sharpness/resolution.

In very large photo prints it is noticable (Nikon 800 vs 800E), but is negligible in 2k video applications (imho).

At 2-3 MB/frame, 24fps:

Between 2.8 GB and 4.2 GB per minute.

The data on the page with the interview says to expect 8-10 minutes of footage per 32 GB CF card, and that works out about right.

Assuming 10 minutes per 32 GB, capturing 2 hours of footage will require 12 cards, or about 384 GB of space.

If the internal buffer allows sufficiently slow cards, these could be had for about $50 each on Amazon, so about $600 for the media.

None of this seems unmanageable...

olpf removed.

i think its quite opposite ...
if u start with 8 mp to get hd its ok.
but when u start with 2mp sensor and then reduce resolution by 30% witch is standard for usual olpf and then aditional 20% more on debayer process there is no HD any more .
that is a reason why alexa use 4.5 mp sensor .

I would just buy some cards and use a laptop for on location backup.

Shoot on one card while other is copying, and some more for backup/safety reasons.

@vladszp: Yes, it is contrastier/sharper out of the box. But it doesn't RESOLVE that much more. Look at the fine detail - it is still there with OLPF. You could bump sharpness/contrast a bit and difference wouldn't be so dramatical. Anyway lets just wait and see... :)

They already have 44k $ at this moment on kickstart and 29 days to go! Looking good!

And unlike every other RAW option out there at the moment, this will supposedly offer a regular video recording format as well (MJpeg from the sounds of it).

Wow! That's cool!!!!

So this has no association with Bolex, just the name?

Very interesting

we got a reply from bolex int. SA switzerland: 'Yes Bolex is involved and we invite you to contact Mr. Joe Rubinstein in Los Angeles for more information about this new Digital Bolex Camera soon available.'

I really want to buy-in but not before RAW files are released. I'm scared there will be some glaring Archillies Heel no one knows about yet.

My concern that they wouldn't reach their KS goal was definitely misplaced...didn't see the reduced rate pre-sale offer at first glance.
