Bogen Tripod Needs Oil?

I purchased a Bogen 3046 tripod from e-bay. It's in very good condition. The 501 head is very fluid, resists pans very well.

I need some advice about the crank portion on the tripod. The up and down motion using the crank handle is a little "herky-jerky". How best to lubricate this gear and the exposed cogs on the post that rises up? - Graphite - 3 in 1 oil - spray silicone - ?

Thanks for feedback. Can you tell me what is the best QR plate for the DVX100A and that can be used with my Bogen 3063 head?

Is a Bogn 3297 o.k.? Or should a larger plate be better?
