Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

I know you didn't write this initially, but is it 72-82mm or 72-83mm? What's the difference? Are these Formatt stepup rings?
And finally, where's the !@#$%&*&% REVIEW?

Sure, on top of page 13 on this post.

So this is the combination.. you need a 72mm-82 or 83mm stepup  ring, then the formatt 86mm clamp down adapter. This gives no vignetting and enough room for the filters.

I hope this helps?

Thanks for trying, but since these are not common items, we need to know exactly where to find these things and how much.

It would be nice for someone who actually owns the Formatt box and the adapters to step forward and give us some guidance.

I'm not trying to slag anybody, but considering all the site administration-led tub-thumping that went on about this product, the present silence is deafening.

Re: Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

So how many people out there went out and bought one? How many of you are using it without problems?

Thanks!

If you look in previous post on this thread, I think you will see a couple of owners' comments including matthewd5, who appears to be selling his in the Marketplace forum.

Re: Bogen Formatt 4x4 Matte Box

i want to be 100% clear (and NOT because i'm selling it)

i had no problems, i simply bought the anamorphic lens and had to get the only matte box that fits, the chrosziel.

i love the formatt and in a lot of ways i wish the chrosziel was that simple and affordable!

i paid $299 for my formatt and i paid almost 6x that for the chrosziel!

the formatt fits the dvx-100 just fine, i used JUST the 72mm ring and the formatt matte box.

i didn't add any other rings or adaptors.

the filters go in from the bottom just the way the demo model did at the bogen booth at the dv expo show in NYC where i saw it.

if you want to redo the whole thing and make it so that somehow the filters load from the top then you would probably have to add something so the filters would clear the onboard mic.

the demo model looked really good so i took the friendly/free b&h shuttle bus to b&h and bought the formatt and a bunch of filters.

if i had a second dvx i would keep it and use the squeeze mode.

i'm only selling it because i'm buying a mini-frezzi on camera light and plus between the chrosziel and the anamorphic lens i spent a LOT of money and it would be nice to recoup some money for the things i have hanging around i don't need anymore like the formatt and the cavision wide angle lens that i don't need because the anamorphic also does a nice wide angle effect.

So...what ended up happening with this? It's been about a year, and I've searched but can't seem to find any other threads that tie this up. Did the DVX shop end up getting the Formatt mattebox? Can we buy it from there or was it all just too much hassle getting the right rings or whatever?

I bought one from EVS and Tommy was very helpful with the advice on the 72mm adpapter needed to seat it on the dvx. One of the things I don't like about the box is that the flag wont stay up if you move the camera around a bit. You can only tighten the plastic knob so much so that it will proably break form overtightening. Other than that it is a solid good looking piece of equipment. It does what its supposed to do well.

i like the formatt box... for 300 bucks, its hard to beat considering its competition... makes the camera look insane... functions as a matte box should, did i mention makes it look insane? haha... lol.
no complaints.

SO . . . after reading all 23 pages of this thread, I think I'm going to buy a Formatt matte box. My one question to Jarred, Barry, etc. . . Do you guys think that the camera mic clearance on the HVX200 will still be an issue with the Formatt when putting 4x5.65" filters in the rotating stage? Looking from the pictures of the HVX, the mic seems a little further back than on the DVX, but it still looks like it may be an issue. Thanks for any replies.

Anyone have a clue? Damn, and there was a Formatt matte box sitting right there too at the Samy's Camera booth at DV Expo!

If you shoot in letterbox mode will the vignetting go away? And would I be able to keep this matte box on all the time even when I put it in my pelican?

Ok...so I read all the threads and all the opinions. Here's what it came down for me. I went with the Formatt 500. I really needed the filter holder and the plus is the sunshade. The bottom line for me was the price ( the cinematics is low priced but so damn ugly). I needed about $1,000 worth of filters and if I went with a more expensive matte box then I couldn't afford the filters. I remember in college making my own matte box and the Formatt is certainly a step up from what I made. At least someday when I can afford a better matte box.......I'll have the filters.

Thanks for all the great input!

i thought i would update this thread, i had the formatt 500 and it worked quite well but then i went with the chrosziel for the anamorphic capability.

i then got another dvx and didn't need the anamorphic on that one and rush at evs suggested the chrosziel sunshade.

it has a small french flag and it connects without rods but it costs just a little more than the formatt and i can still use 2 4x4 filters, one fixed and one rotating.

i love the sunshade. it is far lighter than the 411-53pk (anamorphic compatible chrosziel) and i find myself grabbing that camera way more often because of the lighter weight and simplicity of it all.
