thats the 701RC2 head, its nice but the 501 is nicer.
Isn't the 501 a lot bigger though? Are they that different? Is the 701RC2 head a good head or is it bad? I'm just looking for a very light setup for now, and one that isn't too expensive, which is why I was considering that kit that Cynic821 linked me to. I also need something where I can carry around easily and all day if needed on my person. And possibly later if needed I can get heavier, sturdier, better setup.

the 701RC2 is smaller than the 501. I first bought that head with manfrotto 190proB legs. its lightweight and works pretty good. once I started getting into more panning and shots with more movement I desired something a little smoother and sturdier. Now Im using a 501 and really like it. Looking back I should have just gone straight to the 501.
just my 2 cents

How heavy is your cam, and what are the heads rated at? I have a sub 501, and it was a little weak for my XL1, and not quite up to par for my HD100 either. For a lighter cam, the 501 should be perfect, the 503 might be better though.

Hi:

As the owner of the 501 setup pictured above in the B&H ad, my advice would be to buy a better tripod and head, especially when shooting something as pan and tilt intensive as snowboarding. The 501 is not a fluid head and those legs flex quite a bit.

Nothing personal, but assuming you are on this board, you probably own a nice camcorder like an HVX or an XL-H1, right? It mystifies me how some many camera owners will think of nothing of dropping $7,000.00 to $10,000.00 for their camera package yet will also spring for a sub-$500.00 POS tripod like this. A 501 is fine for static shots/interviews, but for shooting snowboarding or something that is all about panning and tilting, you are really handicapping yourself if you don't buy something like a Sachtler, Panther, Cartoni, etc. You need a quality true fluid head, legs that don't flex and something solid.

Just my advice. BTW, my work bought the 503s and the matching tripod for our three HVX-200s. Bogens are crap, except for interviews or stationary shots. Every camera operator we hire hates them and I hate them, they are a cheap, sub-par tool for serious production. I bought the Sachtler DV-6SB with the Miller Solo DV carbon legs for my HVX and it is a dream to use, smooth pans and tilts and it just feels solid, rather than rickety, like the Bogens. I guess for the money, the Bogens aren't bad, but what do you want for under $500.00? You aren't going to get something capable of smooth pans and tilts. On a 501, try doing a simultaneous pan with a tilt and see what you get, no matter how hard you try to do it smoothly.

Best,

Dan

Yes, definately watch those lightweight legs. I had the 2001 legs, and had to hold the tripod with one hand when panning because they would flex and twist.
