Bogen 4x4 UV sky 1a

I just purchased this filter Bogen 4x4 UV sky 1a. I believe this filter will not only do what a standard UV Haze filter will do but it will also enhance the blue color of the sky -- is this true?
Are Bogen filters up to par with B+W and other high end filters. And how do I know that this filter is a coated filter. No mention on the box only a 10 year guarentee.
Thanks All DVX Friends

Re: Bogen 4x4 UV sky 1a

A sky 1a filter has a very slight pinkish tint--it's not going be anything noticeable and the effect will be exactly zero if you white balance with the filter on. Bogen sells Formatt filters--which are good quality. Sit next to a window and hold the filter at a 45 degree angle to the light. If you see a bright reflection in the filter, the filter isn't multi-coated. If the reflection is faint, then the filter is multicoated.

Great - thanks Barry
I guess I could have figured that out for myself but it's a big help to have someone who really knows answer. Thanks again

Re: Bogen 4x4 UV sky 1a

No problem. Since you're using a 4x4, I assume you've got a matte box. If so, the multicoating is less important because the lens has very substantial shading from stray light. Generally, most 4x4 color and effects filters are not multicoated.

Re: Bogen 4x4 UV sky 1a

I see,
I held the filter at a 45 degree angle to the light just as you said and I saw a reflection that does'nt look faint at all to me.
It sure is a clear and clean piece of glass though. While we are on the suject of filters I'm also wondering about my circular polarizer (Schnider) it has an orange tint. Will this effect my picture? I color balance all the time anyway. It's no big deal I just thought polarizers would'nt have a tint to them. Maybe I can use it as a color filter too.
Thanks Again Barry

If the polarizer has a slight tint and you color balance with it on--you won't have any color shift issues. Are you sure it's not a warming polarizer? Sometimes, the functions of two filters are combined so you don't have to film through as many glass surfaces.

Re: Bogen 4x4 UV sky 1a

Yes Barry the Schneider 4x4 85 Circular True-Pol filter does have a orangish tint to it. So I guess that could have a warming effect. Great two filters in one. There was no description on or in the product box. The Polarizing effect is going to be very helpful. I just remembered, I think the B&H web site has filter decriptions and uses in there filter section - I'll check it out.
Thanks again for your help 8)

Re: Bogen 4x4 UV sky 1a

Ok, the magic number 85 explains it all. Your filter is combination polarizer/color correction filter. An 85 filter warms 5500K light (daylight) to 3400K (tungsten). Typically this filter would be used when shooting tungsten balanced film outside in daylight. I would recommend white balancing after you have the filter in place to compensate for the color correction.

A typical warming filter drops the color temperature 200-700K, much less than the 2100K decrease of the 85 filter.

Re: Bogen 4x4 UV sky 1a

I just finished going to the Film Tools web site and sure enough in ther filter section they also explaind the 85 in the filter name. Your are right The 85 filter warms 5500K light (daylight) to 3400K (tungsten). This means I could use this filter when I'm using tungsten light outdoors in daylight. I would set the DVX on 3400k, slide the filter in, and rotate in the matte box to remove glare from shiny surfaces and reflections caused by the sunlight. Have I got that right?

Re: Bogen 4x4 UV sky 1a

Just do a white balance through the filter--it's easy. Then rotate the polarizer until you like the effect.

Re: Bogen 4x4 UV sky 1a

White balance - White balance - White balance - you just can't do too much ;D

Thanks Barry
