BMW Films "The Hire"

J.R. Hudson

Spirit Animal
Some of you might be familar with this series? A BMW promotion that has been going on for a couple years where they have a couple 'seasons' of The Hire.

Each episode is directed by a different person (most of which represented by anonymous content I presume). I have found these epsisodes very enjoyable for many reasons. All of them are done with the typical Panavision 35's and huge budgets.

I like seeing the car chases as interpeted by different filmmakers as well as the complete visual style of Ang Lee, Frankenheimer, Richie (The Madonna one is great).

What stood out the most for me is that the one I found the most enjoyable in terms of story and style is POWDER KEG directed by Alejandro Gonzalez-Inarritu. This one (unlike the others) was shot with an Arri 16. The images were completely ****ed up with bleaching and insane grain. As slick as the others were technically, I found this one held my attention throughout and just kick ass period.

I bring this up because we hear so much about image quality, HD and the 35 Adapters and it reminds me that it is the story that will grip your audience.

Sigh........

:D

Re: BMW Films "The Hire"

I've seen them all! I actually have them all downloaded on my hard drive in case BMW ever decides to remove them. There hasn't been a new one in quite a while; I think the last one was either "Beat the Devil" or "Hostage." Clive Owen is good as the driver.

And, you're right, "Powder Keg" is excellent; it's moving while the others are slick and cool.

It truly is the story that matters. If you don't have that, then . . .

Re: BMW Films "The Hire"

Yes they sent me a DVD with them all about 8 months ago, Im hoping they are coming with something new soon. That stuff is pretty much as good as a short film you can make.

Re: BMW Films "The Hire"

Very good stuff. Is Frankenheimer with Anonyomous Content? I have the DVD also. Good stuff. :)

I'm with you...Its so easy to get wrapped up in everything you "need"...

Thanks John

Re: BMW Films "The Hire"

:D Even I get caught up in the "If I only had this and if I only had that...". Don't get me wrong, I love having a nice brush selection in my box but it was like a ****ing epiphany in watching the POWDER KEG episode...

Story story story.

Re: BMW Films "The Hire"

the only thing you need to make something like that is talent. And a whole truckload of money.

Re: BMW Films "The Hire"

TRUE. iT PROBALLY HELPS THAT Stellan Skarsgård was the lead (next to clive) and the director I just realized is the director of "21 Grams."

Re: BMW Films "The Hire"

In another short, I was like wow, money and shorts go really nice together!!

and then I realized, the short called "Ticker" starred Don Cheadle...Ocean's 11, Rush Hour 2, so many other movies...

shorts, money, and movie stars go even better together! :)

BTW Thanks John, I was shown this a while ago and forgot the link...

Re: BMW Films "The Hire"

Yeah, "Ticker" starring Don Cheadle and Clive Owen with appearances by F. Murray Abraham and Ray Liotta.

I was just thinking earlier today how cool it would be to work with well-known, experienced actors. I would probably take that over the huge budget if I had to choose.

BLWolf

great avatar, even though not popular in some eyes, my all time favorite movie...
David Fincher was perfect for it...
Chuck Palahniuk's books are great...insane...but great.
