BMD 6K Pocket Cinema Camera

Testing the BMD PCC 6K today, I'm actually liking it a bit more than I expected I would. With my EF S 17-55 f/2.8 IS on it, its a hefty litttle handful, definitely Pocket in name only. But the menus, controls and build all seem decent for what it is. Going to start shooting with this week.

That is a sharp lens I always wanted, for the stabilization, much prefer to the 24-105 F2.8-4L except for the lack of sealing, have to be careful the extending/retracting lens barrel doesn't "pump" dust on the sensor, but otherwise I look forward to your test of this lens.

If it's like the other cameras, lenses don't have access to the sensor as they are separated by an IR filter.

Lots of news lately about awesome new cameras and for me the biggest one is that LensProToGo tested the p6k and it has a lot more latitude than the p4k, almost matching the UMP. Now I want a new camera. And it requires new lenses. Oh crap. T_____T

LensProToGo's exposure recovery tests are one of my favorites to watch. Granted you will not shoot something over/underexposed by 4 or 5 stops by choice, but it's still a great test to show the capabilities of a camera's sensor and codec.

For reference, here is the P4K:

Here is the UMP G2:

Here is the Alexa Mini:

You can watch and compare against a variety of other cameras (RED Gemini, C200, Varicam, EVA1, Fuji X-T3, Lumix S1, etc.) from their playlist here:

Shot some footage out at a lake with the BMD PCC 6K yesterday and looked at the footage last night, impressive. The camera handled extreme contrast very well and with just my cheap EF 24-15mm f/4.0 IS II, the images are pleasing. I need to take the footage into Resolve to mess with some CC and play with the 6K RAW shots but this little $2,500.00 camera, with a few accessories is pretty impressive so far.

I love how you've purchased a ticket for the BM train. You're not ready to take the trip yet, but you have a ticket.

This is how it is with most people who actually finally try the cameras - and when puredrifting likes them, it's a big deal! :)

puredrifting,

Have you done IR contamination tests on the Pocket 6K?

And if so which IRNDs are you using to suppress the contamination?

Lastly, are you using a IR Cut even when not using NDs?

Thanks,
B

Ha, ha, one of the perks of being on all of the PR agency lists for the camera companies, they want me to play with their cameras and write about them.
I liked the UMP G2 but I would never buy one. For my own preferences, it's far too heavy, lack of waveform monitor, the shoulder mount setup is a mess as
far as trying to balance the rig after switching lenses and having the XLRs where they are would be a constant obnoxious thing for me. But it is a good camera,
I could definitely rent and be comfortable in most situations.

As far as the PCC 6K, i brought my Shinobi to the lake yesterday but left these important accessories called the Shinobi batteries at home so I couldn't use my Shinobi.
Which meant that I had to rely on the PCC monitor is very bright direct light to focus, about 30% of my shots were OOF because I simply couldn't see the monitor screen with
bright sunlight shining on it. The ergos are weird, it would be a PITA to try to rig onto my gimbal. It feels as if I dropped it on the asphalt I was walking on yesterday, it would
shatter into a lot of pieces. But for the price, the images are very good. I could see the PCC could be a great little event or travel camera or as a B or C camera. I like my XT-3
a little better but the PCC, once again, isn't a bad choice, esepcially for those who are budget challenged, it's astoundingly competent for almost no money.

Both cameras to me, are very polarizing, there are a few things where you smack your head and wonder, "Why did they do it this way?" but overall, the images from both look very good.

Hi Bern:

I was actually thinking about that yesterday, I don't own any IR filters at all, I was just using my Breakthrough Photography ND3 and ND6.
So far, all I have shot was a couple of hours wandering around a lake marina, I have not yet shot any charts, tests, etc. I'll have to do some research
on which are the preferred IR cut filters for the PCC 6K, maybe I can brorrow some or rent a couple? Have you heard any recommendations about
which IR Cut Filters are the hot tip for the PCC?

Haven’t been following the P6K close enough yet, but did consider it for a recent series of gigs that had me on the road for 3+ weeks, but got ‘The Fear’, & backed away. Once the cameras been in the wild a bit longer I may consider it again.

Came across this test on IR pollution.

I looked at that test and really it does not reflect my experience or that of many others on the BM Fora ....

One of the best short reflections on the camera that I have seen is from Carlos Quintero ...

My take is that there is a mild bit of IR contamination ... not worth the effort to deal with IR Cut filters ... and I lived through the Leica M8 debacle.

After watching the video that you listed a number of weeks ago ... I made an effort to duplicate their results ... without success. And I do like the
majority of stuff they have presented.

Someone else will have to confirm the diagnosis of IR contamination, I could not. I used ND 1.2 (4 stops), could not see IR contamination in the slightest, it was overcast but I don't think that matters. The ND filter I used did not have anti-IR coating. Cheap Quantaray brand, screw on lens filter.

In general, you usually start to see IR contamination with ND 1.2+ (besides with cameras that have built-in NDs which also have additional IR control).
