We filmed cars and the owners don't want people to see their licence plates. How do I blur them in After Effects 5.5? I know how to motion track and set up a null object track, but beyong that I don't know how to placea slight blur of light effect only on the licence plate. Heeeelp!!! :Drogar-Shock(DBG):

1. track your motion
2. creat new adjustment layer
3. apply track motion data to the adjustment layer
4. create a mask around the license plate (on adjustment layer)
5. add the 'gaussian blur' effect to the adjustment layer (adjust amount you want)

I believe that should work for you...

Impossible to do. After effects is a totally unusuable program. Totally non intuitive. Nothing makes sense. What a piece of ****.

I am ambarrassed for Adobe who could have integrated all these functions into Premiere. Instead, they force you to switch back and forth between a good editing program and a piece of **** non-intuitive and totally confusing program called After Effects.

ZAZACAST, thank you, I finally figured it out:

Create an effects layer
Adjust effects layer to the size of the licence plate
Apply blur effect to effects layer
Track object if necessary by hand

I noticed it takes longer to track and object using motion track than to simple do it all manually. Food for thought.

you can do it in premiere pro,

copy clip to above track
crop and blur effects
move crop with key-frames

Glad you figured it out. AE is an awesome product and you should take the time to learn it.
What helped me to wrap my head around it in the beginning was to think of it as Photoshop for moving images.
Hang in there, watch & follow along with the Video Copilot tutorials. You can do it.

Yes, a product as powerful as After Effects can be overwhelming. But that is the price to include all the capabilities. The best way to feel more comfortable with it is to watch a LOT of tutorials. At first, they may also seem overwhelming, but after watching a couple of dozen, it will become familiar and easy to use. The ones Zazacast mentions are excellent.

I have a follow up question. I have a scene in which a hair lock sticks out. I want to erase it. What is the best way to get rid of it, given the fact the head moves? Blur won't work here as the hair should be erased altogethe. Thank you.
