BluLine fresnels???

Yeah, if Aram said the globe was solid in the fixture, then you'd expect that the issue wouldn't be attributable to arc or poor contact. You can look for signs of both on the base or posts after some use.

Sounds like a good deal - what is the stateside parts situation on these fixtures?

If in fact it is the globe, it may be just that...poor stock globes. I recall someone mentioning these BluLines used the same globes as the Arri counterparts? If so, someone should test the light with the stock globe first, then try the same with the replacement Arri one, and see if flickering continues.

Fixtures don't "overpower" bulbs ... When you're talking tungsten, really all the fixtures do is wire the bulb to the mains (120/240v) and physically house and focus it. Bulbs "draw" the current that they are designed to draw, so the only questions are, a) does the bulb physically fit the fixture, and b) can the fixture handle the current and temperature requirements of the bulb. Since you're talking a smaller wattage bulb then clearly temperature is no problem, so then as long as it 'fits' then it'll work.
well put, thanks for simple clear and complete break-down, great thing to read to keep things in-line in my head

Ok. I got to use these lights in a feature I'm doing the lighting design for. The first day I used them i didn't even know they were these. Last night I noticed no logos on the lights I thought were Arris. We had 2 1ks, 2 650s, 3 300s that ran all night long with little break. The only problem we had were both 650s had a flicker problem toward the end of the night where they would seem to sizzle a little and go dark here and there. At first we thought it was just that one light but the other did it too. I don't think it was the plug we were in because on the second outlet we had a 1k running that never flickered and the stinger had ends that light up and they never flickered. We never had time to really open it up and examine, I just opened to see if the bulb was tight which it was. All the other lights worked fine and we had them running about 11 hours. Tomorrow night we shoot again and I will let you know how it goes through out the production.
All in all, they look and feel just like Arris. When I noticed they were Blulines everyone studied them and said the same thing. If they can stand up to the rest of this feature then I guess they are worth the money.
AWSOME!!! This is excellent news! So we'll see how they handle the full feature test...

We havn't had time to take a look at the 650s yet and just left them behind last night. We shot around another 12 hours and had all the lights going again and they stood up to the warm weather and constant moving around. I did blow a fuse in the house we were shooting though on the first location. So far I give my nod to these lights. I will see about getting some new bulbs for the 650s this weekend and test to see if thats the problem. Oh yeah, one screw fell out of the yellow plastic plug.
Alex, yeah its a cool project. A mob movie set in the Bronx.
Here is the new myspace page they just put up, they are putting up a site for it in the next week or two.

They did a short that won some awards and they got funded so they are making the feature version of the short.

so you guys are too lazy to get the 650W bulbs or what? hahah... I would have sent someone out for them/ordered them on line asap... I mean don't you have at least two 650's that you set aside? that's some nice wattage to fill with...

They didn't have time over the weekend but we just used the 1ks on dimmers in places where a 650 would be used for now.

What's your lighting package again? I am curious to know how many lights and the different types & wattage that you have available...

3 1k, 2 650w, 3 300w. We have 2 2k and other lights but they are other types of light.
The ones we have with dimmers seem to fill all the situations so far.

nice package... I wouldn't want to do without those 650's if you have big open night shots though... but I bet it is working out just fine...

please post some screen grabs as soon as you can create or get some! :)

I want to get a few of them so bad... but no cash now...

you have 10k of power... quite a bit! nice!!!! I would certainly love to have that and two generators available to redo this shot:

We are using a 3500w gen so it gets a little tight on power when we do close ups. You definitely need a 1 or 2k to throw some detail on that background. I was trying to light up a corner with the 2k where all the buildings were painted black so it didn't do jack sh1t with a 35mm adapter. The 1ks did do a lot in lighting the closer walls and over passes.

I will try to get screen shots from the DP as soon as I can. I havn't seen anything except on the monitor so I can't wait to see what it looks like.

The only place I find these are on ebay. There's no official site? They look decent and 300, 650, and 1000's a pretty decent range eh?

yes please... I can't wait to see the light quality and all...

I guess a 3500 genny isn't enough then... have you used any fluos in this project?

I am posting because I don't know enough about what's out there and that's why I am asking since there might be several users with similar needs looking at this thread and I am asking in terms of what should also be considered if you are considering getting some Blue Lines....

they work great if soft light is in line with your vision... have you used/considered Alzo lights? again not true hard point light but quite hard and they use much less juice... they have that three bulb one...

I have one Alzo 800W and though I hate the cool down before restrike, wait and the warm up wait... AND on a time lapse I noticed a bit of color fluctuation!!! They do put out ok light and quite a lot for the juice they use... I guess that's what you get sometimes when you try to save

anyone have any other "affordable" lights that should be considered?

I have a bit of high expectations for these Blue lines... they just might be the best of what's around for less than premium... you know... indie gear

I should have some shots by this weekend. The DP has been so busy he hasn't been able to dump any tapes. Tonights shoot looked freaking sweet, All the shots looked good I thought, they even may all be good for reel shots. That wasn't true the other day, we shot a scene with Arthur Nascarella (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0621597/) and we were rushing around so much I didn't like some of the lighting I did but had to keep moving on. The lighting on him was very tight and reel worthy but the reverse on the girl didn't really look good. She was so close to the wall it was hard to get separation, expecially since I tried to light her soft but hard at the same time if you know what I mean. Oh well.

I have used the Cool lights flouros and they are nice. I have not used Alzo's at all. I have the Britek 2 softbox lights and they were ok for a while but then they fall apart after about 10-15 uses. So far these Blulines seem to be the best bargain and I think I'm going to get some.

Hey Kwan, hows it going? You won't be disappointed with them. so far they have been working like a champ. I will get some photos of them on tomorrows shoot.

These kits APPEAR to be the sturdiest, most affordable starter kit for me. I'm thinking 2 650s, 1 300.

http://www.imagewest.tv/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=65

Problem is only two or three people have reviewed them here and not for the long run. Does anybody know of any design flaws or reasons to be weary?

Otherwise I don't see why not get these instead of Britek etc. They look sauve and accordingly to several- perform quite well. It doesn't bother me that theyre not name brand. I just want to know if the stands are made of noodles, the lens is made of peanut brittle and so on.
