i love the baby blue look of the sky in 16mm, and was wondering(using final cut) how you can make a darker blue sky more towards baby blue? just up the saturation? im pretty new to CC'ing, but dont even know how i lived without it before. thanks!
Apple Pro Training Series; Advanced Color Correction and Effects in Final Cut Pro 5
This book has the best color grading tutorials for FCP anywhere. What you want to do is called Secondary Color Correction. This book covers it very well.
You'll use the 3-Way Color Corrector, and use the Isolation tools to adjust only the blue without effecting the rest of the image. I stongly recommend the book and learning to do it right the first time. It's a very powerful and useful tool to master.
Yeah... that's the first thing that came to mind for me, too. BUT, I think BenB has the right idea. Learn it the correct way first... it'll go a lot further than just throwing a filter on there.
I firmly believe from my teaching experience that when someone learns color grading the right way, they're able to do more, faster, and rely less on pre-set filters. Especially the 3-Way Color Corrector, since it's so powerful and flexible and is the center of so many effects and treatments. I've just seen so many students come in to my advanced class, I start with a quck sample of color grading, they all freak out thinking the scopes and stuff are scary monsters. Once they leave class, they can't wait to get back to their studios and fix major stuff that suddenly is a snap. It's one of the really truley liberating learning experiences you can have, learning to do color work in FCP properly.
It's not hard, it doesn't take forever, and the time invested in learning it will pay off big time for as long as you edit video. If given a choice between hiring an editor who can do coloring in FCP properly, and one who can composite and keyframe the heck out of anything, I'll take the color work over any other advanced skill. Simply cause in my professional experience, very few editors of any NLE really bother to learn it correctly. Thus, it's a super valuable skill to develop.
Spend the money on the book, not the plug ins. The book will pay off way more than the plug ins will. And after the book, you'll be able to work with the plug ins much more efficiently that most.
The Advanced Color Correction book is by far the best way to master grading footage in FCP.
