Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD (storage issue only)

Just to throw red meat into the cage:evil:

Blu-Ray obviously seems like the more sophisticated new Hi Def Disc design. But for raw storage, is there any major advantage to the Blu-Ray system over the HD-DVD, other than the storage size of the discs? After all, if the HD-DVD media is much cheaper, what really matters to me is Gigs per $. Of course final pricing is months away, but the if the blu-ray discs hold twice as much, but are twice as expensive ...(not to mention the price of the burners!)

A lot of ravenous Blu-Ray partisans on these boards. Blu-Ray sounds so much sexier...but for pure practicality...do y'all really think it's Blu-Ray or the highway?

Depends when you need it. Simple answer is that if you need it in the next couple of years it's a lot more practical to go with HD DVD. They will be cheaper for a while because the manufacturing process is virtually the same and only needs minor modifications to existing manufacturing plants. BD may get cheaper after that time - along with the drives.

Longer answer - But as much more as the BD will hold I personally don't think it will last. The only people who will prefere it over HD DVD are computer people. The people who actually matter, mass consumers, will latch onto name recognition in the long run which means HD DVD will probably win... I don't know if that's a certainty and if one "loses" I don't know if they will stop making the tech to use either format and just focus on the other. You're probably safe with that... They still make and sell VCRs for crying out loud.

Conclusion - My recomendation *right now* is to go with HD DVD for practicality - and economical - purposes.
