Blu-Ray players upressing DVD's

I really want to get a Blu-Ray player soon, for Blu-Ray obviously. But I also heard that when you use it to play an SD DVD, it upresses it to make it look even better.

How much better does a DVD played on a Blu-Ray player look than a DVD played on a DVD player?

And how does HVX footage look on Blu-Ray?

If you have an HDTV, then SD DVD's played on an up-converting player or Blu-ray player look waaaaaaayyyyyyyyy better than playing your SD DVD's on your HDTV with a standard DVD player.

Some look better than others, but when you get a really good one it can fool you into believing it is Blu-ray. Overall though, I can't say I've seen any bad looking DVD's played on my Blu-ray player. The only time when this doesn't work well is when you get a really old funky DVD that wasn't mastered in 16x9. That is pretty rare though. Also, some older movies (60's and farther back) that were not shot in a widescreen or cinemascope format will have what is called pillarboxing. Instead of black bars on the top and bottom, you get black bars on the sides of the screen. These films are being displayed properly though.

I haven't seen HVX footage on a Blu-ray. As long as you compress it properly then it should look great. Just for example: footage from my XH-A1 burned onto a DVD-R in 16x9 SD format looks nearly HD when up-converted on an LCD HD monitor.

I was skeptical but was very pleasantly surprised with the HDMI uprez on both my Bluray and HD DVD player.

I think you will enjoy it (there is a little bit of noise added).
