Blu Ray is freakin' amazing!

No idea - but I can tell you that seeing a pristine 70mm print of 2001 is one of the best movie experiences I've ever had.

If you ever have the opportunity to see it projected, do not pass it up.

Luis speaks the truth. I think 2001 is the only film I've ever seen project in 70mm... not sure why I haven't seen more.

I wonder if the summer 70mm projections are still going on in Austin.

Luis speaks The Word.

I've seen 2001, as well as Kubrick's Spartacus in 70mm.
Also Lean's Lawrence of Arabia (Super Panavision 70). Truly epic.

This is why I think bluray still has legs left in it. All these (good) rescans are just simply stunning to watch on an HDTV.

I'll second the suggestion of Baraka on bluray, that release will sear your eyeballs in a very, very good way.

you want to talk dynamic range?

Speaking of blu-ray being amazing, here are some shots of the new re-master of Aliens. Super sharp, but grain still intact. Cameron says it looks better than when it was released--

Man, Aliens looks great. Gonna have to pick that up.

Unfortunately they're making you buy all 4...No way I'm paying for those last two pieces of crap. I'm going to try and wait until they release them individually, or someone on e-bay does.

i thought the bond example was much better.

it seamed like they intentionally changed the gamma on the alien movie to brighten up the movie and show the grain. i think it softens the focus as well as the overall look, it's supposed to have a dark tone to the image to compliment the dark tone of the film. i think it's more of an example of the remaster done just to say 'hey look we have grain' then to make a movie visually better or give a better experience while watching the movie.

you can see the impact of the lighting and the stock to the focus and color of the different grabs in the bond example.

I don't think it's fair to judge the gamma as we don't know how these frame grabs were taken. The gamma could have been modified anywhere in the process. Also, there are big gamma differences between computer monitors. As an example of the clarity of the image these are superb. Aliens always was a very grainy movie. I believe they even did a bit of de-noising, which had purists up in arms as when applied too strongly it gives things a digital, watercolor look. This looks very natural.

you can tell the difference between one frame and the other on the same monitor.

it's clear that they brightened up the footage than what was originally filmed.

-- you don't go that many steps up and blame it on the monitor.

How can we tell what's been changed or not when the only thing we really have access to is the DVD version of the films? What are you using as comparison for the change?

i have recently watched 1,2,3

alien(1) was more well lite most of the time in the ship area or first part of the film. it was shot that way.

aliens(2) definitely had a darker tone, although i remember they did use the dust/fog thing when they focused light on the aliens witch brightens up the entire scene, the dvd version was not that great because they wanted to again brighten up the footage to show more detail, i thought it was great as darker footage, it had a nice feel to it.

i also don't like the anamorphic lens flair thing, don't remember witch alien had that, it's the 2nd or the third, i think the 2nd. Ripley was using a big flash light.

Just watched the DVD recently, the light amount looks the same as these screengrabs, however the clarity and depth on the grabs are phenomenal!

DOOD...Just watched the blu-ray of Aliens. Whomever did the digital noise reduction on this deserves a medal. The grain of the film is still intact, as well as all the fine detail, but it's amazingly sharp as well. I wish James Cameron could supervise every film transfer as this and Avatar are two of the best looking discs I've seen yet. The transfer of The Last Starfighter I just watched had hideous amounts of grain reduction, to the point where people's faces occasionally looked like they were drawn with pastels.

Aliens looks beautiful. And wow does the majority of the effects work hold up well. Even the dodgiest rear projection shot in this movie is more believable than 95 percent of the CGI work I see these days. I only wished the sound mix had a bit more oomph in the low end but that's the way it was originally mixed. For me, still Cameron's perfect masterpiece.

Does the Last Starfighter Blu-ray have the featurette where Lance Guest is drunk and leaning against the video game for support? :)

TOTALLY!!! Lol! They have a new featurette that is much better, but the old one is on there and yes, he does seem drunk now that you mention it. I thought he just had a hard time reading the cue cards.

Watch THE THING on Blu-Ray... realize that Practical Effects are the only way to go.

Batutta: Still think NetFlix or AppleTV can hang with Blu Ray? :D
