Blu-ray encoding parameters

Hi,

I would need some help about encoding blu-ray files for a film festival.
Does blu-ray support any type of h264 compression or does it have to be done with
some specific parameters? What about x264 and main concept h.264?

I'm encoding with sorenson squeeze BTW.

you can use x.264 or concept to create blu-ray compatible avc/h.264 files
some basic parameters for 1080p23.97 for example would be 'profile 4.1', minimum bitrate 30Mbps, max 40Mbps, bframes 3, colorspace rec709, resolution 1920x1080, fps 23.97 progressive or 24000/1001, source aspect ratio 1:1, aspect ratio of source 16:9 of course.

audio you can use ac3 dolby same as dvds or linear PCM.

do you want a program/NLE/encoder for bluray authoring to create/burn a bluray disc without menus as well?

I'm using sorenson squueze 8 and if I chose the blu ray preset it limits the data rate to 25Mbs. Aren't blurays limited to 36Mbs?
Am I limited to 3 bframes? In sorenson I've got 2 long pages of settings for x264, can I change those to the highest possible level or do
I need to use the presets for bluray that sorenson provides?
As for the rec709 I can chose either 16-235 or full swing. I wonder why I even have an option to chose. Aren't Blurays 16-235 can they
also be 0 - 255??

Yes. Without menus. Only one video set as first play. I own Avid DVD by Sonic but I've just read that it crushes the blacks and the whites? That it often miss reads the 16 - 235... Do you know of a program that I can create an bluray image with which I won't have to worry about crushing the gamma?

sorenson is a good encoder and i doubt you could get better results without learning exactly what each parameter does and how it impacts the datarate and all the bluray specification limits.

there are some strict parameters to make the disk compatible with any/most bluray players. profile 4.1, 709 and 3 bframes is part of that currently.

i think all/most bluray players are required to be 2x or at least do 54Mbps total sustained datarate,

with max 40Mbps video data rate and 54Mbps max datarate.

but if you choose to allocate half(1/2) your datarate to LPCM then your left with 25Mbps(1/2) for video data rate, that makes sense. it's still good video datarate, or you could choose to allocate most of the datarate to video and a the rest to ac3, still good enough sound for most movies.

both fcpx and adobe premiere/encore have options to make bluray disc image or burn bluray discs.

all that is assuming it's a short film (1 video, 1 audio) and you won't hit the size limit of a single or double layer disc.

you should proof the video at the color correction step before exporting the video in avc/h.264. TVs and projector are made with 709 specs, so you should be compatible with them.

Okey. Thx. I thought that I could get away with a better, more high profile encode. But seeing as this is meant for a film festival projection I definitely want to be on the safe side, so I'll use the 4.1 profile.

The film is 86 minutes in lenght. So I can't afford a high datarate. I'll keep it down to app. 30Mbs.

Don't have neither. I work with avid. I can always download a trial of Encore. Encore probably doesn't have any problems regarding reading the black and white levels correctly? Or is the something that I should be weary of?

Do you maybe know of a freeware program?

i have seen some freeware software that can make the file structure and burn bluray discs(some software only burns image files already structured), but we are talking no simple menus, no crude titles, no chapters. google 'freeware burn bluray'.
