blown out car glass...

So i couldn't find any specifics for this but i need to blow out car glass with a gunshot... how exactly can i do that? Where can i buy glass that fits into a stock car window? And then how do i put a hole thru it on camera like it's being shot?

Hold on a second. Glass breaks are almost never accomplished using live arms. The exception to this is with devices like a Sweeney gun, which is pneumatic and operated by a licensed technician.

Instead, tempered glass is loaded with two or more "glass poppers" just above the bottom edge or similarly out of frame. They take a standard D60-03 squib load and fire a captive pin through a hole that is in contact with the glass. The pin never leaves the chamber, and the popper falls to the ground in the shards of glass.

To get the window to fall clear after breaking, the glass is often shimmed from the bottom when possible to allow it to cascade freely over the uneven surface below.

If you're not experienced as a licensed pyrotech, you'll need to hire a technician in. Even then, squib work requires that precautions are taken to protect your crew from flying debris and noise. I've seen people injured by even the most innocuous devices like corkers.

There should be rules in this forum about posting on pyro and other dangerous SFX techniques. It's not a game.

well here is the deal, a man is being shot so as he reacts the glass has to break behind him as well... but i'm not a licensed technician by any means and ghetto rigging something makes me nervous. I would be fine if I myself was acting as well as directing but when it has to do with other people i'm vary wary...

That's close in work there, definitely not a place for the Sweeney gun. Let me think on it more, but what if you do this as two separate shots, one with the talent alive and one in a smash cut immediately after the second glass break (behind talent)?

The second break could be almost certainly be done with poppers. Depending on the year and make, the standard glass might be actually be the laminated safety on the front driver and passenger window and definitely the windshield. That would also present a problem, because the glass won't fall away and you'll see that there is no hole.

it would be the side window of a car actually... not the windshield. I dunno make and model. Prob a lexus IS-300.

one of the best looking gun and bullet footage i have ever seen...well made and well acted.
Weapons Test clip

there are shots where the bullet hits the camera lense and the car window. its way too cool and very realistic... dont know how they did it but its too good . if these guys are on this forum, may be they can help.

thanks

hey brock, here's some old school advice again, no cg here.
try having some one hide in the car with a center punch. A center punch is a tool that has a spring loaded tip that punches marks into metal when pressed on it. Available at any tool store. The center punch is also great for breaking car windows, quiet and effective. I usually cary one around in case I ever drive off a bridge into the water, you know how hard it can be to open doors under water :)

Anyways I'd try the effect out at a wrecking yard on some old cars or on a neighbour's car, assuming you have one that's an a@@#ole

just make sure the guy in the car is well covered to avoid getting glass in his hair or eyes

hey brock
just realized you're looking for glass to put a hole through, not shatter.
try a small sheet of 1/4" plexiglass or acrylic. Wack it with a slag chiping hammer, (welding hammer with sharp point on one end). It may punch out a nice bullet shaped hole complete with spider clacks.
see if you have a store that sells plastic near by, they would sell different types of clear sheet plastic, some crack better than others, they'd be able to recommend the
best for the task. You'd definatly have to do the shock locked off , and replace the real glass with the broken plexiglass than comp in post.
