Blown Away by the Power of Music in Film!

So, I interviewed a composer today for the score of my current film project, Girlfriend 19. I had him compose music on-the-fly. It was an eye-opening moment, to say the least.

The scene I picked is quite dramatic, involving my main character and her boyfriend. The composer first tried an acoustic guitar, then switched gears to synth pads and piano. The difference between the two blew me away! With the guitar, the scene was sweet and melancholy, with the pads and piano, it was eerie and slightly neurotic. Wow! The same scene, same performance, but two totally different experiences.

Okay, duh! right? Well, until you sit there and watch your film be totally manipulated by music in front of you, it doesn’t quite hit you. It was rather disconcerting that I can work my ass off, write characters and situations, direct them in a certain way, light a certain way, then have music, just one element, totally change it any which way you please. Crazy!

Just thought I’d share….

I can't remember what season/episode it was, but on one episode of 24 on DVD they had an extra with the composer. He did just what you witnessed, and played the scene a few times with different concepts. My wife and I were watching it and we were both flabbergasted at how it completely changed how the scene played. It is amazing what composers can do to a show.

I just witnessed the same thing. To me sound equals at least 80% of a film. If you have decent visuals, good pacing with editing and some half decent actors then a great composer, sound design, and good audio can take a project over the top.

Awesome examples - thanks. I'd say the Different Stokes music is quite appropriate for what became of the child cast later in life!!!!

And the 24 feature sounds amazing....
