Blowing up my monitor and FS100

Hey there,

Wondering if anyone else has had this experience... I've got the HVX200 with a Zacuto studio package. I'm using a Switronix 130S V Mount battery, an FS100, and a Nebtek Marshall VR70P-HDA with a Nebtek upgrade to use the Panasonic batteries. I've used the setup with no problems regularly for the past 4 months. For some reason without changing my setup in any way, today both the monitor and firestore were fried.

I've got them both powered off the switronix. Neither component has it's own battery on board. The firestore uses the d-tap outlet on the switronix battery and the monitor uses an xlr to d-tap that goes to a d-tap extension cable then to the switronix battery plate's outlet. Plugged in the power and both units began smoking.

While the components were cooking I noticed that the battery meter on the side of the battery was registering no charge when pressed. As soon as I disconnected everything the battery level went back up to full.

I have since reconnected all of the wires and checked for a short. They seem to be working perfectly. The monitor and the firestore have to be replaced because they're both fried.

Anyone been here before? Any ideas? Some seem to think the battery put out a power surge and the components don't have any built protection.

Thanks,
Howie

While I can not offer an explanation for what happened, one thing needs to be made clear: there is no way a battery can put out a power surge. If a battery is a 12V, the most it can put out is about 13V. The problem must be elsewhere - faulty wiring, cabling, reversed polarity applied to the monitor and FS100. You said nothing changed since last time, do you want to take a second look at what might have changed?
