Blood Splatter

Hey guys,

I need your help. I have a shot where a person is going to be shooting himself with a gun in his mouth. I need to know the most realistic way for the blood to splatter out.

Details:

He won't be in the shot. I'll have a WS dolly shot where it shows him with a gun in his mouth, than right when he gets out of the screen, the blood is going to splatter onto a curtain behind him.

Would just throwing a bucket of blood and guts look like a gun shot? Or do I need to rig up some firecrackers?

The guys from Broken have a cool doc about this on their DVD. I think they rigged up some kind of potato gun and fired a mixture of fake brains and blood out of it. Check out the website and see if you can find it there.

theres a ton of people taht do this. A paint sprayer, or any other object that can hold pressure will work. A lot of people will fill up a condom then tape it or ruber band it to the end of a nozzle, pump up the sprayer then let it rip. They run the hose through the back of the shirt and out the back of the head.

its actually one of the more simple effects. Getting shots to look like squibs through clothes, thats the tricky one. (to look good that is)

Though, for a head hit, I would recommend using a larger diameter hosing, that way you can get bigger and "thicker" splatters. Good luck!

i think it'll be easier if you follow those suggestions. i mean, as long as the actor doesnt use a shotgun otherwise you'll have to come up with how to get the chunks of brain splattered.

Chunks of brain are bits of sponge, and skull bone are pieces of styrene from a coffee cup.
