Blood mix

I have tried several quick and dirty approaches to stage blood from a store.

I know what the pros use, but I'm curious what other are doing in a pinch.

Basically: corn syrup (Karo or whatever)
red food color
blue food color (little bit added for venous blood)
water to thin
? for opacity - flour, corn starch, etc.

What do you think?

I use a very similar mixture, but I use condensed milk for opacity, and a little bit of laundry detergent so it comes out of clothes easier

I've tried making it a million times and it always looks pink to me. I like that stuff called Bottle of Blood. It looks very real and its runs down your skin like real blood.

Like I posted before...

2 parts karo syrup
1 part chocolate syrup
1 part water
Red food coloring with a few drops of blue food coloring
A little bit of peanut butter to catch the dye (optional)

and when you are done, heat it up and put some mini marshmallows in it.

yum yum yum.

Chocolate syrup, by itself (well, slightly thinned), makes excellent stage-blood, if you're shooting black-and-white.

I'm pretty sure a friend of mine uses 2 parts strawberry syrup, 1 part chocolate syrup + liquid soap. Or maybe it's the other way around. I'll buy some syrup tomorrow and test it out, LoL.

i suggest you dont use any food stuff otherwise it is hard to get it out of the costume like chocolate or syrup.
i use (not sure of the amount, just experiment)
red food colour
green food colour (dont use blue--> it will turn purple evenually pink)
washing detergent or liquid soap (the one that makes the least bubble) (also helps thickening blood)
very VERY VERYYYYY cheap tomato sauce (ketchup) (really works, but stinks a little) (otherwise tomato juice)

recently i went to draw blood, and REAL blood is actually very dark, and thin. to describe it, it's dark like wearing sunglasses looking at fresh meat, and thin like mouth rinse.

to get the blood out of the costume (if you want it), straight after the shot rinse it with water, dont wipe it. then soak it in hot water. LOL

The corn syrup based blood will go rancid after several days if you don't keep it refrigerated. It still looks fine, but it gets this bad smell.

I too recommend the "Bottle of Blood" brand blood. It has a very realistic blood look at a fraction of the price of professional brands. It's usually available at Wal-Mart around Halloween for about $5.00 a pint (much less if you get it during their post-holiday clearance sale). I actually stock up on Halloween items like that after Halloween and sell them on eBay the following year.
