Blockbuster to Favor Blu-Ray High-Definition Discs Over Rival HD DVD Format

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Blockbuster Inc. will rent high-definition DVDs only in the Blu-ray format in 1,450 stores when it expands its high-def offerings next month, dealing a major blow to the rival HD DVD format.

The move, being announced Monday, could be the first step in resolving a format war that has kept confused consumers from rushing to buy new DVD players until they can determine which format will dominate the market.

Blockbuster has been renting both Blu-ray and HD DVD titles in 250 stores since late last year and found that consumers were choosing Blu-ray titles more than 70 percent of the time.

"The consumers are sending us a message. I can't ignore what I'm seeing," Matthew Smith, senior vice president of merchandising at Blockbuster, told The Associated Press.

Blockbuster will continue to rent HD DVD titles in the original 250 locations and online, the Dallas-based company said.

The decision was helped in large part by the lopsided availability of titles in Blu-ray, Smith said. All major studios except one are releasing films in Blu-ray, with several, including The Walt Disney Co., releasing exclusively in Blu-ray. Only Universal Studios, which is owned by General Electric Co., exclusively supports HD DVD.

Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc., and Paramount Pictures, which is owned by Viacom Inc., release films in both formats.

"When you walk into a store and see all this product available in Blu-ray and there is less available on HD DVD, I think the consumer gets that," Smith said.

The rollout of Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 game console, which comes standard with a Blu-ray drive, also helped give the format momentum, Smith said.

Blockbuster's decision, while significant on it's own, could boost Blu-ray even more if other retailers follow suit.

"It will help shift the balance toward Blu-ray, clearly," said Richard Doherty, president of The Envisioneering Group, a research company.

The North American HD DVD Promotional Group said Blockbuster's decision was shortsighted and skewed by the success of films released by Blu-ray studios in the first three months of the year. The group said HD DVD has since gained momentum, selling more players and popular titles such as "The 40-Year Old Virgin" and "The Matrix" trilogy.

"I think trying to make a format decision using such a short time period is really not measuring what the consumer is saying," said Ken Graffeo, co-president of the group.

The two formats have been battling it out since they both hit the market last year. Studios hope the high-definition discs, with their sharper picture and more room for interactive special features and games, will replace standard definition DVDs.

The formats are incompatible and neither will play on standard DVD players, although standard DVDs can be viewed with either a Blu-ray or HD DVD player.

The Blu-ray camp has been helped by the release of such huge hits as "Casino Royale," "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Spider-Man" coming out exclusively in its format.

As the battle has unfolded, the price of the high-definition players needed to show the movies has plummeted. Toshiba Corp., the major supporter of HD DVD, is selling its player for $299 with a rebate, down from $499 when it first went on sale.

Sony, which is pushing Blu-ray, recently slashed the price of its player by more than half to $499. The player retailed for $1,000 when it first was introduced.

Looks like it's time to throw in the towel, HD-DVD....

Do people actually rent from Blockbuster? They really suck. At least my local store is crap. They don't even have a horror section.

Rarely go there either. I remember the "good old days", when you could rent great 70's exploitation & slasher movies from Blockbuster. The one near me had a real culty selection of movies, for a chain store that is. I guess that slowly dried up, especially as VHS died out as a format.

Hmmmmm, I wonder how "The Avenging Disco Godfather" is going to look on Blu-Ray?

If you ask me... Blockbuster is just fishing for relevancy by attempting to decide the winner of the DVD format war.

Well as professionals it would certainly be nice for this format war to be resolved. I don't know much about each but I have heard that blu ray has a higher capacity....and more industry backing...so I hope that this decision by blockbuster will steer things in that direction.

As far as ive heard, Blu-Ray is winning. i hardly hear of Hd-DVD, and everywhere its blur ray bluray bluray...

im glad either way let it get settled.....

Yes. Waiting for this to be over is killing me. I will say my experience has been the opposite of Timur's, as all I hear about is HD-DVD. Shows how screwed up it is...

maybe its a NY thing. The stores here that carry HD films, have a 4 aisle Blu-ray section and like half a shelf of HD-dvd....

considering that DVDs are massively, exponentially, outselling both HDDVD and Blu-ray combined, and high def has nothingtooffer other than "it looks prettier," I don't think either of them are going to "win"

I rent once a a while from them if im really bored and have nothing better to do, because Hollywood Video was claiming that we where scratching Disks and Forced us to pay $0.25 a rental for insurance so we canceled them.
I'm thinking about getting netflix again.

well, I just spent 400 clams on an HD-DVD player.

I had a hard time deciding, but from all the information that I gathered, HD had a superior image. The downside is a smaller selection of titles.

I don't rent from LackLuster anyways. I'm a netflix man myself.

I hear this is not the case anymore.

Yeah, i was rootin for HD dvd too. From what i have read i like the way hd dvd was going. Didn't like some of the things Sony i mean blue-ray was doing.Funny thing is blue-ray has more movies but has about the same amount of good ones. It seems the first batch of blue ray, sony put out was the crap sony had layin around. Also i hear mac are gonna come with blue ray drives :( I have a hd dvd player an im happy with it intil i am forced otherwise.

Blockbuster is way better now. (not saying they are "great" though)
I had netflix before, but now have the Blockbuster version of netflix. It's the same thing, 3 dvds's at a time via mail, plus you can get them from the store. And if you return a mail dvd to the store, you can get a store dvd, and you will still get the ones in the mail, so you can actually have more than 3 dvd's at a time!
But anyways, I do think Blu-Ray will win.
Overall, Blu-Ray seems to be a lot more popular and more of a buzz in general. The only place I hear about HD-DVD is here on DVXuser forums. (mostly because you can burn HD-DVD movies onto standard 4.7gb discs)
Outside of here, all I hear is Blu-Ray this, Blu-Ray that.
I just hope this battle is over quickly. I forsee a HD-DVD announcement sometime later this year or early next year, surrendering.

I still think HD-DVD wins because of the name. Blu-Ray could be anything to average middle America. It's this wild word that they don't understand. HD-DVD gives them two names (HD and DVD) that they understand. Plus the players are much much cheaper. Clearly, the Playstation 3 is the reason for all the blu-ray rentals. But I think Blockbuster may have jumped the gun on this. As people begin to buy standalone players, they'll buy HD-DVD because of the price alone.

As far as I can tell, HD-DVD's movie selection is lackluster right now. I'm not siding with either one, but it just seems overall that Blu Ray is pinning down HD-DVD with a wrasslin' move, and the count is at 2, about to be 3 and out!

I have the $199 XBox 360 HD-DVD player, and am totally sold on the quality. I'd pick up a Blu-Ray player if the price dropped, just to see those movies I can't get on HD-DVD.

Blu-Ray is benefitting mightily from the PS3 install base. The HD-DVD powers-that-be should have built the technology into XBox 360.
