thanks surf. i want to try your method, but i don't know where to begin with after effects, do you know of a tutorial or book out there that explains how to use the tools you mentioned?

That looks like an actual filmed element being used as a moving texture on a 3D room, and then composited in. It moves like ink dispersing in water.

I would approach it as a video element, film it, and use it in high contrast.
