blender

I think I fall into the "don't such as much as I used to but still suck catagory." 3D is hard to do well. :( That's why I'm going 100% digital matte painting for my short instead of CG.

Then there's Lightwave.

That is a nice scene, and it is actually possible in just about any capable package these days. It's just like the choice of camera or paintbrush. In the right hands, even a primitive tool is stunning. The true test is to see it animated.

However, I never got a taste for Blender (except for the one that Horse is mentioning :cheesy: ).

Open source is great (like GIMP), but the tools aren't always so good.

Lightwave is often overrated, but "whatever works" is usually the name of the game.

Overrated huh?

Hmm.....

Well, you know what I mean. It's the artist, not the tool (within reason of course). This guy obviously could make any 3d tool sing.

I'm only saying that because I've been to dozens of expo's where each tool is touted as "the best." After a little walking around, looking at the booths you see the most amazing things made with all kinds of tools: feature filled or stripped, expensve or cheap... and a little playing around with some demos and you reaffirm your opinion that it is ultimately the user that counts.

well, lightwave is nice and all, but i'll let the picture do the talking....

Oh, yeah. I've seen some amazing things from a zillion different programs. But what they don't tell you is that you can't do it unless you have OCD, or are bipolar and in the manic phase.

Need some good work for a contest with a deadline 3 months away? Oh, well. Sorry. That's not gonna happen.

True, 3d is the most demanding of the computer arts. I have endless unfinished projects due to "lack of interest" and overall time. Much like adventure games, you can build and explore all day and not get very far. But when it's done well, there's nothing that can touch it. I love film/video/photography, but I wish I had more time for 3d.
