What's the story? If I didn't know Blade Runner I'm not sure I'd have much incentive to see this.
... is my biggest worry about the film!DP: Roger Freaking Deakins.

To me, Deakins is a technician, not an artist. Haven't seen anything by him that really excited me.
A lot of people liked Sicario...I felt like there was no "chemistry" between the individual scenes and the story...the whole film felt like a watching a trailer....no glue whatsoever holding the story together...I did not even finish watching it...BR 2 should have had Ridley Scott at the helm...but I think unfortunately he was working on Alien Covenant.Well not wrt Villeneuve, as he has no technical skills, especially lacking when it comes to camera movement and framing. Watching Sicario, this was my #1 problem on a technical level: abysmal camera placement and framing choices, just completely clueless and brain-dead (see the big thread I started on Sicario in this forum some time ago). Sicario felt like something a student would do - a student who at his best gets a D. Not that he compensates with any great insight into acting, as he atrociously miscast Emily Blunt in Sicario. Villeneuve is just an abysmal hack. At least Michael Bay has a mad kind of panache. Villeneuve is simply dull.

Certainly at this stage they are appealing to those who know the original film. I'm sure future trailers will expand upon the story (at which point I will likely not watch them).
I'm not arguing that he's extremely skilful.. But he's just too correct and reserved. Blade Runner needs someone that paints with bolder strokes... But as I said, I'm cautiously optimistic.I don't know what to say to this. The man has amazing control of his tools and palette. His work is generally not showy, but it is precise and beautiful. There is a reason that he's the favorite cinematographer of most working cinematographers.
I could see this argument being made about Villeneuve, who IMHO has yet to make a truly successful film. But not Deakins, who is responsible for shooting some of the greatest and most beautiful movies of all time... he would not be a Coen Brothers regular if he was too "reserved" a filmmaker.I'm not arguing that he's extremely skilful.. I might be influenced also that very very few of the films he has worked on previously really appealed to me.
To stir things up a bit more: I'm also not a fan of Kubrick![]()
I made The point about him too. Arrival was ultimately a big "meh".I could see this argument being made about Villeneuve, who IMHO has yet to make a truly successful film.
