Blackmagic Pocket 495.00 Summer Sale

Used it before and wasn't a fan, and never thought of buying it but hell I am sold!

Even if I'll use it someday, sometime, for a extra angle, or for greenscreen work...

Blackmagic is attacking the market!

Really did not enjoy blackmagic's customer service, especially considering I received two lemons, one BMCC and one Pocket. And I also thought the menu system required way to much clicking to change basic things like ISO (on the Pocket, didn't find it to be as much of a problem with the touch screen on the BMCC). I sold all of my BMCC cameras and said that I would come back to them until they changed they fixed most of their problems. But at $500, for the image that it produces, it certainly is tempting.

I cracked. I don't need it, but $500...

And now I can reconsider all those S16 lenses I've had to pass by all these years (no doubt the prices have gone ballistic like anamorphics since I was last in the market).

Is anybody aware if the pocket cameras available are new units or are they from the pile of returns BMD has got to have?
How does BMD handle returns for dead/hot pixels?

I ordered one "day of" the announcement. B&H showed shipping in 1-2 days (which has understandably changed to 2-4 weeks due to renewed demand).
I ordered it with a pretty good compliment of accessories . . . none of which I needed.
Just spoke with B&H and it doesn't look like I made the 1-2 day cut.
Great price but there's no way I'm going to wait an "unspecified period of time" for one of these (been down that road before).
Cancelled the entire order . . . will re-order when/if they become available.
Who knows, maybe by then they'll be $249 . . .
(a little humor).

The guy I spoke to had 'One left' in stock.... I called 5 companies before I got to that. Hope they've not been yanking my chain!

Rumor mill: supposedly black magic will be releasing a pocket 4k camera at right around $1000 and some changd. Wow things have really changed. Give me that to pair along side my new a7s and the ghost hunting for cameras is over for me. Imagine shooting 4k with options of prores and raw for around $1000. Insane!

If true, there don't appear too many candidates for sensor.

I bought mine from B&H last thursday night and it said 7-21 days backorder from memory. It shipped friday and will arrive tomorrow. Your mileage may vary.

You might have dodged a bullet. I'm almost wishing I had the opportunity to cancel my order. I bought this thinking it would finally open up the world of 16mm lenses to me. Shoulda done more research. Took the better part of that time to find one that even covers the sensor. I suppose $500 isn't so bad for learning a lesson about crop factor the hard way. I won't be looking at any more c-mount lenses that's for sure. I realise now that tricking this thing out will turn it into a white elephant fast, so going to have to reign in my ambition. $500 off could easily end up costing me thousands. If I treat it as a transitional camera I can save this impulse buy from ignomy, so I've got to keep the accessories simple, total cost under $2000.

After researching c-mount I've realised metabones is essential so I essentially get that for free with the discount. Other than that a small cage to protect it, cheap audio solution and maybe a loupe (or evf if it works with my other cameras) and I'm done. Might stretch to get the Sigma 18-35mm to make it a single lens camera although I'll probably just stick to my Nikon glass. I think it can still be worthwhile as long as I work within its limitations. And after reading about RAW workflow I don't know how keen I am to get that image anymore. Probably best I didn't find that out on a much more expensive set up.
